How frustrating for you. I found this when I started college and was told this by a University on an Open Day. We all know that it is a popular course but if everyone believed it and doubted their ability, then few would apply and Uni's wouldn't get to pick the best. Everyone should be encouraged within reason to follow their chosen path, be it midwifery or something else.

This is an alien way of attracting students and never experienced this with my first degree. Perhaps it wasn't as popular, who knows. To put people off doing an access course seems unreasonable because not everyone will complete it and only those that really want to follow their path of midwifery will stick at it as there is no other route into midwifery from a college.

If midwifery is for you then it is up to you to put a really strong case across. I know the job situation is difficult at present but there will be a need for new midwives as others leave and retire.

I was very focussed on what I wanted and nursing was not for me and I wouldn't consider nursing first as I don't want to be a nurse. I am far too old to do a three year nursing degree and then a 18 month coversion if it still existed after the nursing degree. After all the negativity,I did get two interviews at the two Uni's I applied to and two offers. It is possible and you have to believe in yourself and convince your college that you are their candidate.

The only other thing I would suggest is to look at the university list on here and to speak to the Uni/s you would like to apply to and find out what other access course they would accept other than the college one. It might be that they will accept an OU or other distance learning qualification.

Everyone on this forum I'm sure will give you lots of support and advice. Best of luck to you lassie!
