. Dehydroepiandrosterone is then converted into oestrogen by the placenta and it is this cycle of events that increase the amount of oxytocin receptors (Tortora 2006). This increase in oxytocin receptors make the uterine muscle much more sensitive to oxytocin which then causes the uterus to contract, the beginning of labour contractions (Soloff et al and Caldeyro-Barcia & Theobald).
