I think there's no right way to approach an essay but it does get better with experience, I notice I have a huge advantage over my cohort on access because I did a degree previously and I am well used to writing essays. You just develop your own style of approach.

I read as much as I can first and develop an idea in my head of what I'm going to write, or at least the order I'm going to write it in and then I write the essay, with the books at hand but at the time of writing I generally know exactly what bit I want from each book. Sometimes I write the intro first but usually something pops into my head midway through. Conclusion I do at the end.
