I work as a ward clerk and most of the time I'm actually based on the postnatal ward and I sit at the nurses station in the middle of the ward - strictly speaking we're not allowed drinks/food at the desk which I fully understand - however, it also depends on who is on charge on the particular shift you are working - there is 1 particular M/W who is a stickler but others are more flexible and you can have a cup of tea/drink of water at your desk. I do find it hard though because if I get very hungry my blood sugar levels drop and I get very shaky/hot/clammy.
