What is an independent midwife?

How long after qualification did you become and independent midwife; did you work in any other areas of midwifery previously?

How does an independent midwife differ from those working in a hospital or birth centre environment?

Considering the autonomy you have working independently, does the responsibility daunt you at all when working outside the normal support network of PCT, Hospitals and other health services?
