well, I don't know the whole ins and outs of housing benefit, so can only go by my own experience.

I do recieve Hb from the council to help pay my rent to a private landlord. I am a single mum with 2 children and recieve an NHS bursary and child tax credit but not a student loan as this is my 2nd degree. So my financial situation, according to my local authority is that I am indeed entitled to Hb!

i don't know how heavily this is influenced by the fact that I have 2 children, so as your daughter has just left home midwifemissy the situation might be quite different????

Anyway, do take the time to phone them as i'm sure you will be entitled to something, a third of your rent maybe??
