Hi fellow wannabe Midwives,
Just thought I'd let you know about my fantastic day today! I've got an interview on friday and thought it would be really good to get in some experience beforehand. I went on to this site http://www.independentmidwives.org.uk/ and entered my postcode, i found the number for my local independant midwife and gave her a call. She is fantastic!! i explained my situation and asked if she could spare a few hours for me to ask her some questions. But she went the whole 9 yards! she arranged for me to spend the day with her today, viewing some ante- and post- natal visits, allowing me to talk to mothers and to her about experiences and issues. She then invited me back to her house for me to ask any questions and she gave me a mock interview. Although she has been practising Independantly for 9 years she worked in the nhs for 25! so her knowledge was wide and she drew info and experiences from both sides! I would recommend looking intoit to anyone, no matter what stage of application your in. She was honest about the kind of Midwife she thought I'd make, gave me some amazing advice and reminded me to always keep my raw passion, even after hard sloggin at uni and in the nhs. I am on such a high jus spending the day observing and i cannot wait to (hopefully) get started! Ramble over, let me know if you want any more info. Jemxxx Last edited by Jem; 10-Mar-2008 at 23:34. |

It sounds like you had an amazing time, I hope I can gain at least some of this from my upcoming NHS work experience but don't know whether they will really have the time, as most of the others doing work experience are at school and are only doing it cos they have to! Am hoping that it will be looked on favourably that Im doing this off my own back, with no prompting?
Do they have independant midwives all over the country as I havent heard of any in my local area? Glad you had a good time and good luck for your interview! xx
