| I am currently looking at access courses to apply in 2008 or 2009. I am living abroad so need to study online. I am looking at the Open University course K100 which is 'Health and Social Care'. I also found a course called 'Access to Midwifery' which I thought would be perfect BUT I spoke to someone at Southampton and she recommended a 'science based access course' instead, not sure why. I would have thought that ALL the material would be relevant to the profession ... What have other students studied? Have many of you taken an access course through the Open Uni or similar? As we do not know where we will be coming back to live (!!) it is difficult for me to say which uni I will be applying to and I don't want to start on the wrong course so need a course which would be good for all unis if possible!! I can start the OU one next month but I need to be quick!! Thanks for your help. BTW I have no science A' levels but have a degree in education and a post grad teaching certificate ... qualified in 1994. ![]() |

| based on previous degree and postgrad you probably wont even need to do an access course, I graduated in 1996 started in midwifery in 2007 and didnt need to do one. But is worth checking with uni when you decide where it is you want to go, or NMAS or UCAS good luck

| Most unis require study within the last 3-5 years so enquire at whichever you plan on studying at what they require. whether or not you have to do access is anyone's guess but if they only want recent study, shorter courses should suffice.

| Currently doing an Access to Health Professions course, it's really useful and covers; sociology, psychology, anatomy and physiology, maths, I.T. and communication/research! K xx

| i think if you have gcse or a level you need to have studied in the last 3 - 5 years. BUT if it is a higher qual then it is longer... my previous degree was 11 years previous to starting midwifery so yes enquire, but at the time seemed to be a good rule of thumb for most places

| Thanks for all thr replies. I'm still looking ... and getting more confused. It makes it a little difficult as I don't know where we will be living when we return. I have contacted a couple of unis in the South of England to see what they say. Looking at the K100 Open Uni course, it seems to be a Level 1 course which, am I right in thinking, will not be high enough?? I thought the Access course must be Level 3. |
