Default References help!

Hi all

I'm preparing to complete my application through CATCH at the moment. I need to get a reference from either an educational source or employer.

The guidance notes for completing my application recommend that this is completed by a principal teacher or head of year if you have left education within the last 3 years or alternatively by a line manger in your current employment.

Details are required for a second reference although I believe this is rarely asked for (and should be from education source if main reference is employment and vica versa).

I left school 3 years and 2 months ago, previously my head of year has completed my reference (this is my 3rd application). I feel he is the best judge of my character in general however I am unsure whether I should ask him to provide this reference given that it has been slightly over 3 years since I left school.

I could ask my employer for a reference however, I feel uncomfortable with them knowing I am applying for uni. Opportunities have already passed me by due to my pregnancy and I would not like to jeopardise my place in the company by this being known about (mainly due to the risk of being unsuccessful).

Soo, to cut a long story short, should I go for education or employer as main reference. I know the answer is probably phone the uni I am applying to, explain the situation and see what they advise, which I will do tomorrow. Just wondered really whether anyone has been in similar circumstances.

Thanks

Natalie

I would say educational, it depends how long you have worked in your job, but at the end of the day, they cannot type a bad reference, and if you really don't want to stay there, then ask em..

Thanks for the replies both - I was at open day today and asked about this. She did say either/or but probably educational was preferred as I have not been in my current employment that long, so will go ahead with that.
