If you were to buy the Oxford handbook of midwifery, you can get everything else from the library. Don't spend too much, look for second hand books or on Ebay for cheap books and get a feel for your style of learning.
I have built up a library of around 70-80 books over the 3 years - and how many do I use frequently - about 3-4! The facilities at the Drill hall library are pretty good and they subscribe to quite a few journals, so you can read them there. I'll let you borrow any of mine when you start as hopefully I won't be needing them as much then (she prays!) All you need for the course is a big bag (for all the library books), a pack of pens, reams and reams of paper and ink cartridges and a good pair of comfy shoes. Everything else can wait. KS

totally agree with kentishsp.....
CCCU library pretty good. Have ony invested in an A&P book (coz I is rubbish innit) the Oxford Handbook (coz it is small enough to take on placement) and a good thesaurus. Year one done! For year 2, so far I have bought pharmacology for midwives and thats it. The library will have so mnay books and you will find the ones you are using more regularly are the ones you will want to buy. Having said that, you can renew them 6 times at 28 days at a time, which is basically a whole semester, providing else no one else needs them. So i just keep renewing Johnson and Taylor Skills for Midwifery Practice (which is excellent) and either a Mayes or a Myles (good standard textbook, will get you through the first year but not a good idea to reference from it after that as the tutors know it back to front!!) On top of that i subscribe to TPM (who doesn't??!!) and Midirs - again not necessary as the Maternity database you will access at the library is basically the same thing......... Save your money for other things.....like Food and petrol (lifes essentials!!) x
