York Interview Day

THE LETTER ARRIVES…

Well… Interview selection day at the University of York appears to be VERY intimidating from the letter you get sent out… I mean… Who in their right mind would CHOOSE to sit with strangers, be talked at till your ass is numb, sit tests like we’re back in school, chat with a bunch of strangers and not appear nervous yet not over confident and bossy and then be grilled by 2 people already doing what YOU want to do?! My idea of hell to be honest!!!!

INTERVIEW DAY ARRIVES…

After meeting a lovely fellow interviewee in the car park we mooch around till we find where we’re supposed to be… a classroom with around another 20 people already there… scary!

MORNING LADIES…

We sat down to be greeted by the LOVELY lady who replies to all our anxious emails and then wait for the tutors to arrive to give us a little info on the course. A little info? Wow, info overload! We’re told all about the university, the course, the placement areas, the structure of placements and accommodation. Then we’re told about the structure of the selection day… tests next!

EXAM CONDITIONS LADIES…

First off we started with the numeracy test… the test I’d been dreading! It wasn’t bad at all! A simple multiple choice test comprising of simple questions of addition, multiplication, division and conversion… ACE! Then we had the written comprehension test… Well I wasn’t that bothered by the thought of having this one… though the structure of it threw me! I was expecting to be given an essay title and told to get on with it… nothing of the sort! It was like re-sitting my AS Level English exam! A short article then questions with set number of marks for each one and not enough time to do it… I think I did okay but I wasn’t sure!

GROUP DISCUSSION…

Well the group discussion comprised of two discussions. The first discussion was as the whole group to decide the topic of discussion for our smaller discussions. After many ideas we decided on “continuity of care and Maternity Matters”… Fab topic choice… such a can of worms to open! I do fail to see how they could really differentiate between candidates during our discussion as our group was amazing… All very caring, calm and friendly to one another. Everyone was included, asked their opinions and even dragged opinions out of the tutor and clinician we had!! Very down to earth, friendly experience. It felt like sitting with a group of friends discussing a common interest!

FEEDING TIME AT THE ZOO

We were taken back to our “holding pen” and armed with our allocated interview slots we were set loose for lunch… no body particularly ate a thing… wandered around aimlessly… fidgeted nervously and chatted amongst ourselves.

DEEP BREATH…. 1 2 3…. BREATHE!

Arghhh my interview slot came… I sat… and waited… hoping they were running late as I was almost last… No such luck!!!! ARGH!!! In I went… with the same ladies who had been present at our group discussion… Felt at ease RIGHT away… fantastic ladies! Very friendly and welcoming.

We were all apparently asked the same questions…
  • Why Midwifery?
  • What can you bring to midwifery?
  • How do you organise your time?
  • How do you deal with conflict?
  • How do you cope with someone who does not agree with your opinion?
  • If you were presented with a dying lady who was a Jehovah’s Witness refusing bloody products, what would you do?

I actually enjoyed my interview. It was a great time for a chat, asking questions and generally having a conversation with somebody who was interested in all the same things as me… It was great… and I soon went over my slot after worrying about being able to fill 30 minutes!!!!!!

THEN THE TWO WEEK WAIT FOR DECISIONS… NIGHTMARE!

CCCU interview day

Interview time 12.30. 8/2/06

Arrive very early at 10.30 am, promptly get lost in Canterbury, but loads of time so no problem!

11am
Meet up with one of my access course buddies, who has their adult nursing today too, find our way to the refectory and have a cup of tea!

12.30

Go to Powell lecture theatre at canterbury campus for applicants talk through, question time. CRB forms to be handed in and ID to be checked also. I felt incredibly sick, nervous, had palpatations and could have done without this faff to be honest. I just wanted to get it over with.

13.15

Tour of campus (I didn't really take this much, tbh. I figured there was little point in finding my way around a campus I may never get in to!)

14.20

After getting called individually to give in our paperwork etc, and the tour we were called into groups for midwifery, nursing etc and waited for our interviewers to meet us and take us of to interview. (gulp!) There were 12 of us

14.30

Across to erasmus building for a group discussion of the course, question and answer time. Structure and content of the course and its intensity. The necessity for short holidays and many weeks in placement and university. Lots of applicants had very intelligent questions, needless to say I kept quiet! There were four interviewers, two lecturer/ midwives and two practising midwives. They all seemed very nice.

15.15

We were separated into two groups of six, the other group were taken upstairs to another interview room. My group remained downstairs. I t was asked how we wanted to order everyone, had anyone travelled very far and so wanted to go first?
We all stood there blinking!

15.20
First lady goes in, we start to chat a little, some are very reticent to talk, others quite friendly. One or two quite boastful (still know them, no change at all!) As each one came out, said how it went or merely left to go home, so the numbers dwindled, until there was myself and one other. I felt quite sick by now. Terrified I was going to make a huge mistake and not get in, trip up and fall into the laps of the interviewers or something! The other girl got called in, she was very nice. Each candidate had been in ther for between 10 and twenty minutes.

As my wait as last to do continued I remember trying to work out if it was a bad thing if i was last, how had the others done? How would I do? What should I say? should i change the plan I had? Was it good to be in there for a few minutes or twenty?

16.45

Finally I get called in for the biggest moment of my life.
I took a deep breath, walked in, shook both of their hands and sat down. The chair was facing one of them more than the other, I remember moving it so that I could see them both equally, then stopped and said is that ok? (was it some kind of test?)
I looked at them both and remember saying to myself 'please don't be sick' and 'don't say er a lot!'
They asked me 'why do you want to be a midwife?'
'what do you think you could bring to the role?'
'How would you cope with the demands of the course and your home life?'
'What are the negative aspects of midwifery?'
'What aspects of current midwifery news was I interested in?'
'What midwifery books, journals or articles had I been reading?'

I won't answer each one, suffice to say I wasn't sick, but did say 'er..' alot! I was pleased with some answers and not so with some. I walked out after shaking both their hands and asked as I left 'How many times can someone apply, before it is definate they can never get in?' They replied 'as many as they tenacious enough to try!' I nodded and left

Walking to the bus afterwards I thought 'well, that's it, your fate is now sealed' I rang my OH and then my Mum and told them, they both hoped I had done enough to get in (hmmm..)

Back to college to go through the post mortem with everyone there, I was the first of five midwifery students on our course to go, (as was the buddy who had been interivewed for nursing, she was the first of lots of nurses!) so there were alot of interested faces looking at me.

From that day in college (biology day, 9/2/06) we waited an agonising 3 months, after all the theories and tormenting memories of the bad points of your interview (we all did this..) Seeing unsuccessfuls crushed after receipt of THE letter...

I forget wqhat subject we were having that day. Tracker was down, we couldn't find out... We rang via mobile and couldn't get through, tried and tried and finally managed to. I was with two other midwife wanabee's, getting into a real state wondering, just how I was going to deal with not getting in (ever the realist, positive things happen when you know for sure what is going on!) We were sharing a phone, I volunteered to go last, wanting to know, but not!
They both got in and there were tears and screams and hugs, my turn.
I gave my name and waited....

Conditional offer! I was thrilled, so happy and really excited, I had made it! I done enough to get into uni! After everything that was said about not even bothering!

You know the rest...

The access course was fun, but a long time, the interivew day was excruciating, the wait, the very worst thing ever....

But it was the best thing ever, and though it seems a long time ago now, it also feels like yesterday...and I wouldn't change any of it for anything.

Phew, after re-living that am off for a good ol' cry!

Default Re: Interview Testimonials

I had interviews at Swansea and Bangor but I'll let someone else post the Swansea one!!

2/4/08

Arrive in Wrexham General Station, immediately make a fool out of myself by asking the man at the station if I was in Wrexham... Get a cab to B + B (which was only 5 mins walk away!) and settle in for a loooonnngg night! No hot food allowed in the B+B but the food they offer isn't my cup of tea so decide to go to Tescos, then to chip shop and smuggle some chips back in! Go through personal statement and possible questions, ring mum and watch a night full of soaps on TV! Lovely!

3/4/08

Wake at 6:30am, refreshed and positive! Showered, hair done, dressed and made-up by 7:30am - just in time for breakfast! The breakfast was amazing! Cornflakes followed by toast and then a full cooked breakfast!! (Only ate the half of the cornflakes, half a piece of toast and a rasher of bacon though) Cab arrives at 8:30am and I make my way to the uni (Which was only 10 mins away!!) Hmmm, not feeling so positive anymore!!!

8:45am

Am sitting in a waiting room, waiting (Obviously) when I realise I'm in the wrong place... Duh!! Slight panic as I try and find out where I'm meant to be but, panic over, the building I needed was just around the corner. Get there, make sure I'm in the right place and then go for a sneaky ciggy (Yes, I know I shouldn't but I'm a smoker - they're my lungs!)

9:00ish

Am smoking outside when I see two women walking towards me, they turn out to be sae156 and nuttymum! Lovely ladies! We go inside, sit down and wait - chat about how nervous we are, our journey to the interview and just general chit chat and wait for others to arrive. By 9:15ish we were all there, nervous and ready to go!!

9:30am

Ok, so we all go to the lecture theatre for a little presentation on the uni; introduction to lecturers and midwives who were going to be interviewing us, course structure, bursaries etc... and the nerves really start kicking in! Once that's over we're told to have a quick break and would sit the essay test soon.

11:00ish (I think!)

All separated and given an article to read and reproduce in our own words in 20 mins. Scary!!!

11:30am

Separated into our trust groups and taken to separate rooms for group discussion! This I really enjoyed, we all spoke, asked questions and generally had a great chat. Spoke about this site and our own preparation/personal questions etc...
My interview was scheduled for 3:30pm but when they realised I'd travelled from South Wales they rearranged everyone's interviews by about 15 mins and I got to go first (1:30pm) so that I could catch an earlier train home!
We were then sent for lunch and told to be back in an hour or so

1:00pm
Arrive back and after arguing with the woman on the phone who said I couldn't get an earlier train, I decide just to get on it and hope for the best. All sitting in the room waiting and having a lovely 'get-to-know- each-other" chat when it's time for my interview..... I was so not ready for it!!!

1:30pm
Am all nervous and practically shaking as I walk to the interview room but manage to pull myself together just in time!! Can't remember all the questions but they were something like;

Why do you want to be a midwife?
What is the role of a midwife?
What skills do you have?
Do you have any experience in the health care setting?
Do you have any hands on experience relating to midwifery?
Have you read anything in the news lately relating to midwifery?
How had I prepared for the interview?
What was I doing on my access course relating to midwifery? (I answered and said I'd recently done a post natal depression presentation hence the next question)
What is my opinion on PND?
What do know about birth centres and how do I feel about them?
Where do I feel women should give birth?
Why Bangor?

That was it I think.... They said I'd hear within two weeks!

2:00
Say goodbye and good luck to all the ladies waiting!

2:30
Get to train station, get on first train to shrewsbury and pray that noone comes to check my ticket...

3:00
Cry at the ticket checker who sees my original ticket and let's me off thankfully! (Tears are a great bargaining tool!)

3:30
Arrive at Shrewsbusy, grab a coffee and get on the Swansea train....

5:00
WooHoo!!! Back in Port Talbot...

What an eventful two days!!

xx
