Default Occupational Health Checks....

I have mine on Friday and was just wondering exactly what it entails....

I assume they will weight me, check blood pressure etc and take bloods for HIV/hepc testing.

I also know they are going to give me my first lot of Hep b shots.

Does any one know what else they will check?

I had some time of work last year due to depression - the docs diagnoses reactive depression.... my dad was in intensive care, my job was insecure, my mum was making herself ill about my dad, i was caring for my nan, planning a wedding and it all got a bit too much for a while. After wards, i struggled to deal with my emotions and was recommended "anger management" (I hate that term) to help me deal with my emotions and express them in a contructive way rather than letting them build up and boil over.

do u think this is going to affect my offer? i've been totally honest on my occ health form and my docs have supported this on the form they complete saying it was "reactive depression" rather than "just depression"

Just getting so so close to my dream and to have it stripped away from me because i stuggled with some stuff a while ago would be gutting.....

I would also like the answer to this as I am hoping to apply for a place to start Sept 2009. I had clinical depression for over a year following a very violent marriage, after leaving I began self harming and hit rock bottom I was treated at the Priory for 12 months and I have been symptom free and off medication for about a year now and have a fantastic partner who has supported me throughout and now I feel happy and confident to being this journey into Midwifery but worry that the universities will look on this badly

There was a specific question on my OHC about self harming. Like me, you appear to have a justifiable reason for the depression rather that being some one who just cant cope with everyday life.

can any one help us please???

I don't think they are interested so much in the problems you have had in the past, rather if it is affecting you now. If that makes sense?

I am sure someone can explain that better than me, but felt I should answer your question. xx

hi girls
thanks for your posts and for sharing stuff about yourselves that is obviously sensitive and incredibly personal.
I can understand your concerns, but think that the only people who can really honestly answer your questions are your prospective uni's occy health departments. I think you should give them a call, explain that you are enrolling and in the process of filling out the form and have a few questions. You do not have to give your name if you do not want to.

If these past situations are on your medical records then I would say that it is pretty much a given that you need to include all the information no matter what. But please don't let things worry you, you have obviously been through so much already, and dealt with many issues, that you must know that worrying about it now, is not going to change it!

I do believe that it really will not be a problem, occy health is about checking you are fit and well now at the start of your course, not what has happened in the past. However, as I say, you really should phone them.

Hugs to you both
x

Hey just wanted to let u know that my OHC went well and I passed with flying colours.... The lady was really nice and said that all they are interested in is here and now. If you've suffered from mental illness/depression in the past, they need to make sure that you are dealing with it now and you have the skills to deal with the difficulties you face in everyday life. If you're off the meds and havent been self harming, you should be fine.

Hi girls!!

I have suffered from depression in the past and was very open and honest in my occ health interviews and they were absolutely fine with it. i think to be honest it can be turned into a postive. I said how i felt the experience has helped me to empathise with people more and it has opened my eyes to how other people may be feeling. Like ollybolly said, its more how you show it is affecting you now i think.

Good luck xxx
