That happened to me when I was at college, it is wrong, they should be helping and encouraging people to be prepared for whatever course they want to apply for.

We were also warned that it was highly unlikely we'd get a place and were advised to switch to nursing. Out of 5 that applied, 3 of us got accepted - not bad going!

I was told the same Kate, and when I didn't get in after interview it was inferred it was due to my age, not in so many words, but I knew what was meant.

It's sad because there is one girl in particular on my access course that would make a fantastic midwife but unfortunately didn't apply...

That is very sad, it is so so wrong to be so negative and to almost bully people into making choices they don't want, just because it is easier...but how can it be easier when you would spend three years doing something you don't really want to do?

Exactly... It's unfair to the student, the cohort and the patients as the students heart will not be fully 'in it' - well mine wouldn't be anyway. I always said I would apply again and again if I was unsuccessful, I wouldn't compromise myself by doing something I didn't feel strongly about. But hey-ho, some people are more impressionable than others and some just can't say 'no'. It's a sad situation...

When I went to the uni open day for midwifery, the student who was telling us about course content etc says that even when you apply through CATCH for midwifery, they send you a letter telling you about the high volume of midwifery applicants and aks if you'd rather apply for nursing. She told us to ignore the letter and tell CATCH your applying for midwifery and won't accept nursing as an alternative. It is shocking they do this, because if I hadn't found this site or went to the open day I might not have had the confidence to tell them this is really what I want to do. I'm sure other girls have got this letter and went along with nursing thinking midwifery is impossible.

Yes, some people are more impressionable than others, but they shouldn't even be given that advice in my opinion, it should be their choice what they apply for at the end of the day.

I would have tried again if I hadn't got a place, but sadly time wasn't on my side so couldn't keep on applying.

Oh my god! That's shocking, I've heard of it from lecturers but not from the application service itself!

I'm glad you found us too Bee - you stand your ground missus! Lol.
