Morning everyone!
I am just after opinions if that's ok!? I am from an administration background and have not worked in a care setting. I have done volunteer work in the past in a care setting but not recent enough to count on my application form. I have contacted various hospitals and midwives and have found a midwife who is willing to let me go along to as many of her classes as I would like. Such as breatfeeding, teenage mothers, antenatal etc. I am going to attend as many as I can on a regular basis. She said she could give me as much work experience as I needed. This will be going along to these classes and watching and learning so I feel will be very beneficial and will get me clued up in many areas and will give me a chance to meet parents to be etc. BUT.....as someone from a non-care background, do you think it is enough (experience wise)? I am unable to get work experience because it is not something that is widely available in the area I live. I am clued up on the role of a midwife and I am very passionate. I have already drafted a personal statement (which I will add to before I apply) and I am really happy with it. Many thanks. |

Hi,
I would definately say 'go for it' any experience is better than none, and it clearly shows you have thought about it, and gone out and done something about getting some experience. The uni's know how hard it is to get care experience, and you will be able to show that you have made an effort to get some. It will give you an insight that a lot of other applicants won't have, and something to talk about at interview. Good luck, hope it works out really well for you, and that you enjoy it, look forward to hearing about your experiences.

I would definately do that, how brilliant the midwife is able to be so helpful!
I had no previous experience of midwifery except having my children, so anything extra you can get is brilliant! Good luck with it and let us know how you get on?

Thanks for the encouragement!
I just want them to know I am serious and I really want this! I think they do prefer you to have some care experience but with my background and the area I live in and the fact I have a little boy to look after, it is easier said than done. I am hoping that if I attend a variety of classes it will be enough to make them consider me without the care experience. |

I came from a mainly office based background, and had only been working in a maternity ward for 6 weeks when I was offered my place. So I wouldn't worry about it, you are doing a great job in managing to get this expereince.

Thank you MM! I have only ever worked in an office environment. The only experience I have is the experience of pregnancy and labour myself as well as looking after my little boy. If I attend as many classes as possible, I still have a bit to go until I apply in September so it should show that I am keen!
Thanks for the support. I just worry that I won't get an interview after all the hard work - I know it is like that for a lot of people - I just want to do all I can. |

I know just how you feel, but you are doing everything you can to get some experience, and as long as you make that stand out on your personal statement, then the lecturers can see how passionate you are.
