| I have been thinking for some time about what to do when I qualify. At the moment, me and a fellow student midwife have plans to apply to work in Australia when we qualify, as well as applying at home, just in case! The only thing is, I'm not sure whether or not Australia take newly qualified students, so if anyone knows anything about going down under, I would be very grateful. I feel like if I don't do it now, then I never will, but at the same time, I want to start my career somewhere I am familiar. You can't have it all, I guess! Does anyone else know anyone who has taken the big leap, or is planning on doing it

| hmmm. I have thought about this, but it is a long way off for me. As far as i am aware, they prefer midwives with one year post grad experience. And NZ too, though it may not always be the case and may vary between trusts over there. Not much help am I ? sorry

| Be careful that places like Canada/US don't require you to have a degree in Nursing PLUS Midwifery. I think the US certainly want that. As for Australia. I'm sure a lot of NQ are going straight over after qualification. I read about a couple on SMS, plus a few from StudentNurse (nurses) are going over. I'm not sure if you need to be on the NMC register here to register over there. Regarding myself... Eventually it is my goal to emigrate to Aus. It always has been (I blame Home & Away!) but probably won't until Coby is at least Secondary school age (plus any other additional children!) So hopefully I'll have had a place and well qualified by then!

| Sounds like it's a possibility then for newly qualifieds. I think the best bet would be just to ring up one the agencies and have a chat, but I was planning on leaving all that a little later, to avoid disappointment if they say no. At the moment, the though of jetsetting to an exotic destination is a great motivator, so I need to grasp onto that methinks!

| As for practicing as a MW, I know that Ontario requires you to do a 9 month top up, but British Columbia doesn't. I can do an elective over there in my 3rd year, but there seems little point of i need a nursing qualification before i can do anything.....anyways. I need to research a lot and cross everything at the same time! Good luck with the Oz ambitions. I take it you are a single mum too? Is that why you are waiting until your LO is a bit older? |

| Cannot speak to Australia, but i know some new Zealand DHB's are looking at offering New grad programmes to UK students. There is further study required to get full registratin here, though, due to prescribing and law differences, mainly. | No I'm not a single mum. I just want my children to know they're first and foremost British, not Australian. Plus allow them to have more of a say if we go or not, where we go etc.

| For those of you thinking about Canada. you do not have to have a nursing qualification first!! it differs from state to state whether you have to top up but midwifery is recognised in it's own right without the nursing. they do want you have experience though. |
