GRRRRR! Nothing ever goes to plan...
Posted 15-Sep-2008 at 14:55 by riabirt
We had a nice surprise on friday - DH recieved a letter from Halifax saying that he had just over a grand in a bank account!
He'd been paying into a shares scheme with his work for a while, and we were really disappointed when he left that job when he only recieved a cheque for £700.
It appears that only some of the money went toward the shares, and some was put into this account.
So, all weekend we've been waiting for today to be able to call Halifax and confirm that the money is actually his. In the mean time, we've been planning what to spend it on - New 3 piece suite, or save it for a holiday...
We finally decided that the best thing to do would be to pay off any arrears we had (from his changing jobs - 6 weeks without pay crippled us!) and any spare cash we'd put into a savings account for a rainy day.
We thought this money would put our sturggling finances straight and we'd be ok, instead of the huge struggle we've faced since may.
No such luck!
DH has just come home, F-ing and blinding - "f-ing car! nothing ever goes right for us!" etc.
On his way home, he was struggling to get the car in gear and it's making a really horrible rattly grindy noise. It would appear that the gearbox on his lovely 6 year old car has gone kaput!
So, it would appear that the money is now going to go toward fixing the car! I could cry, I really could.
DH has now taken the car to the ford garage to see if they can look at it.
The irony of it all is that he spent a lot of money on that car a year and a half ago (after his old car blew up on the motorway), in the vain hope that if he spent almost 5 grand and bought a newer car, it wouldn't break down so much! We've now spent so much on the damn thing, and it looks like we're gonna have to spend more.
Why does nothing in life ever go according to plan. For once, something nice happens and cheers us up, then it all comes crashing down around us!

Hi, so sorry to hear about your car. The same thing happened to us and we had to spend our saving's on it.
Life just is'nt fair but at least you have the money to do it, that's a positive.
Keep smiling and sending you a big hug. xxPosted 15-Sep-2008 at 16:19 by kelly1alfie

Aww thanks Kelly.
Bit of an update. DH took the car to the ford garage, who can't look at it until friday, which is no good really, so he called up a smaller garage and they're going to look at it tomorrow.
He then came home and handed me an envelope - He'd been down to the Halifax, and the Envelope had £800 in it!
He'd also been down to our housing association and paid the arrears we owed them, so a huge weight has lifted! Just have to pay the rest we owe, and pay for the car. Bit sad as the dream of a new sofa has definately died now, but hey ho! At least we have a roof over our heads still! xPosted 15-Sep-2008 at 17:51 by riabirt

£550 Later...
Car has a nice new clutch and some other parts, and apparently has a gearbox which is failing, but might last us a bit longer... Yikes! How the gearbox can be failing on a car that has only done 50,000 miles I don't know... GRRRR!
Anyway, We've paid for the repairs and the car lives to see another day... for now! lol!
We also ofund out today that the amount we owe on the mortgage is a lot less than we thought it was, and it'll be covered from the last bit of the stash of cash we have, so it looks like, for now, money isn't as much of a worry...Posted 16-Sep-2008 at 20:30 by riabirt

Glad you got the car sorted - what a pain in the bum. I'm lucky that one of my best mates, one of the lads I used to work with is a mechanic so when my car goes wrong I go begging to him LOL. Glad you got your money sorted for a while
See you soon
