My day 4 PN woman developed hypertension after being normal on day 2. She also had swollen feet, feeling detached, shaky and fuzzy headed. BP was 142/92 when her it had been normal throughout pregnancy. I sent her to her GP, with a letter outlying her condition, her BP readings and the fact that she was treated for hypertension post birth.
GP decided that a BP of 142/92 was normal. She thought that was woman was anxious and stressed. She also said that she was unable to prescribe any anti hypertensives until she has had a blood test done and oh, can you please get it done at the local hospital and we will review your result in three days time - until then, have some diazepam.
The PN lady referred back to me and I advised her against taking the diazepam and referred her to the PN ward, who readmitted her. Turned out a GP had also prescribed her some medication which was contra-indicated with high blood pressure - interesting that the GP failed to check her BP first before prescribing it.
Sigh.
