My Midwifery days
Not my cup of tea!

After three brilliant weeks on delivery suite, I am now on the post natal ward for my last placement week as a first year.
Although I have continuity of mentor this week, I have realised today that I just don't like it on there, it just isn't for me.
Although the ward is usually mad busy every day, I miss the one to one time on community, the chance to sit and talk to the women, help them with any problems they have, I know we do this on the ward, but it feels so much more pressured to me on there.
I also miss the huge range of emotions I get on delivery suite, no matter how tired I feel on there, the excitement, adrenaline and anticipation always kick iand before long I forget how tired I am and just get stuck in with my work.
It might sound very strange to say, but I feel 'at home' on delivery suite and community, and I just don't get that on the post natal ward.
Oh well, only four more days on there, roll on Friday!!!!

haha missy i know exactly how you feel- 8 shifts and counting till i'm done on my 6 week placement there. I too miss delivery and the one-on-one care. I hate the fact that we have so many women to care for- i often forget their personal details- and to me that's losing a big part of midwifery. its not so bad when its manageable, but like you say most of the time its totally crazy.
good luck! and have a nice summer xxxxxx

I used to think that too, especially in 1st year, I couldn't think of anywhere else I'd rather be but in community, now however I feel more "at home" in the hospital setting, as the years progress you might feel totally different about it all, but I cannot believe your first year is nearly through, brilliant!!Posted 07-Jul-2008 at 22:18 by tracyb

yup, know how you feel there. It is not my bag at all, though like it better than I did at first. It does help when you are able to get more involved with the care side as it passes the time. At first i was following my mentor up and down the corrridors alot of the time! I hate it tbh and it is the one place I wish I was a nurse! Keep going hun, I keep thinknig we don't have too much time there and hopefully not too long when we get a job either!Posted 11-Jul-2008 at 12:19 by smwife
