X-Factor - the best and worst...
Posted 16-Aug-2008 at 12:06 by riabirt
I've been doing my usual saturday (and every other day) exercise involving watching trashy TV programmes in my Pyjamas well after midday and was just watching the X-Factor, the best and worst programme.
I wonder if anyone else feels this way, but watching some of the people on this programme I actually feel like a well rounded, sane person! Perhaps this is a little harsh, but I wonder if some of the people who audition fro the programme actually DO delude themselves that they are that good.
I especially love the cocky ones who walk into the room and say they have the X-Factor, and totally bomb out! I guess that's what makes the programme entertaining, but I do worry about the amount of people who appear so serious and openly say they are good and argue with the judges when they don't get through.
I think it's the seriousness of some of those auditioning that worries me.
A guy from the town I grew up in auditioned for X-Factor. He was always on the karaoke in the pub in town, and to be honest, he wasn't very good - He was a squealer... Unfortunately for him, lots of people used to jokingly tell him he was great and should audition. So he did. The poor guy's audition didn't go very well at all and the Judges were very harsh. He argued back, and it was painful to watch. It's such a shame that some people couldn't be honest with him instead of taking the mickey, knowing that the poor guy, who had little self esteem would take it seriously.
I do wonder whether some of the people that audition do it because of the misguided encouragement from others. Like the episode where the 23 year old girl auditioned, saying she was the X-Factor and her voice was 10 out of 10, only to be laughed at by the judges. Her father then came into the room and shouted at the judges. Simon Cowell, quite rightly IMO, told the father that her disappointment was acutally the fault of her father for encouraging a hopeless dream.
They do say Love is blind, deaf and dumb...
It's such a shame really. I love the programme, but feel very sad that by watching it, I'm encouraging the embarrassment and shattered dreams of these poor people.

I agree, I know its entertaining to watch but I can't understand how they get through the first round!! before they meet simon. I think the production crew are half to blame as they know they can't sing but give them false hope just to make their show better. I must say the x factor is at its best when its at the last stages and you see the contestants who can sing and the competition starts. I'd love to see more of boot camp before the finals also.
But then again i'm a hypocrit as I still watch the show and laugh when the person is completely out of tune!Posted 16-Aug-2008 at 15:06 by carla

I watched this too. It's car crash telly. I love the early episodes as some are just soo bad!!! But I do understand your point, I would feel so sorry if it was someone I knew being humiliated / putting themselves through that. Also some of them are obviously not quite the full ticket and it can be quite cringeworthy to watch.Posted 19-Aug-2008 at 04:08 by Ani
