placement hours

Posted 11-Jun-2008 at 18:35 by stacetheace
can i just ask,i have been looking at littlenoos question on placement hours and i found that most of the replys are that a lot of students do the same hours as their mentors and a lot of the times are 7-7.30am till 21.30 or 7 till 7 which is 12 hour shifts but my problem is that my breakfast club opens at 8 the earliest! so can i not go in later or do i find alternitive childcare such as a registered childminder to take them to school and pick up and for afterschool?how do other students cope with early shifts and kids, im having one of them worrying days again thanks!!!xxxx

Not sure hun, maybe one of the student M/W's can answer this for you. I do think that in most placements you would be expected to work the same hours as your mentor. In our hospital most of the M/W's seem to do 3 shifts, earlies, lates and nights I'm not sure that they do a long day shift but I know different hospitals do...what hosp would you be based at? Is there anyway you can find out what their shift patterns are?
I've already thought about this and I've come to the conclusion that when I'm on earlies, my husband would have to get the kids up and fed breakfast but then I'd probably have to ask my Mum or Dad (who only live 2 mins down the road) to take them to school/nursery. On lates, I'd be able to drop them at school/nursery but I would have to rely on parents to pick them up or find a childminder who could do so. Nights would be the easiest as hubby would be at home all night and I would then have to take them to school/nursery after finishing work and then go home and get some sleep!!!
I'm sure others must be in a similar position and we all muddle through somehow!!
xx

I had to use a childminder I treid brealfast club and it didn't work, they are too rigid and open on the dot of 8 so they were not even useful for uni days. Guess it depends how far you are from uni and placement really? My uni is a good 40-60 min drive due to traffic and we get park and ride too, so we get there in good time and start at 9am (so leave home at 7.45) work I drop off at 7 for start at 7.30 as I live ten minutes away from my placement hospital. I'd say most if not all of us use a childminder, as we are often in need of flexibility and sometmies long hours, my childminder is completely brilliant, but they are like gold dust around here! pm me if you need any info Stace? hth? xx

hahaahah, sorry hun and no you're not dumb!! it means hope that helps! do you know what ROFL means? cos I haven't a clue?!

It is stressful as before you start on the course you wonder if you'll be able to manage all the organisation it needs and money, time etc let alone learning and essays etc...but you will!! it is a bit like holding your breath for three years tho! you know where I am should you need any help with anything!

Hi stacetheace

This i probably no help but i am making my OH leave work so i can pursue this career, that woul be hard financially to do, but with a student loan and my bursary we will manage as it's only for 3 years. Maybe consider the implcations of him leaving work to become full time dad and whethr he would be successful in finding work once your qualified?!

This might not work for most people in the real world but i feel it's my most realistic option. Bring on the struggle!!!

Hi guys firstly ROFL means Roll on the floor laughing... I think!

I think we are sorted for sept ... the plan is kids will go to breakfast club at 8am - if I can't take them then he will and he will then just finish work later or work longer shift another day when I'm off. afterschool I have found a club that will pick them up and take them to the community centre/kids club where they can stay until 6pm - if either of us are finished earlier then we will pick them up asap.

The kids afterschool club have said they can be flexible about what days I leave them there so long as they have a weeks notice, so basically I have to pay for at least 2 days per week but other than that they just need to know on the monday each week what days they will be.
