I say you need, a huge supply of black pens, a lil pad for in your pocket, a fob watch, comfy shoes, and a box of tissues!
In many units midwives and students have to carry thier own thermometer for obs - nenatal axilla - after birth and on the ward. Many dont have baby tympanics so this is the only way of ensuring babes temperature.

Does having a thermometer sound a bit odd to you then? How do you do your obs in your trust? Its good getting this feedback so we can see what goes on in different trusts.

Thanks D:)

In my trust they use the disposable tempadots for both Mum & baby. Personally I find them very hard to read.

I agree Missy, and they are open to alot of error, Ive heard stories of them being incorrectly stored (on windowsils etc) and so give incorrect obs, hence are unreliable.

I hate them, it took me ages to work out how you are supposed to read them, and half the time they don't even show a reading when you have finished grrrr.

They are little disposable strips with dots on one end, you place them under Mum's tongue, or under baby's arm. The temperature readings are down one side with dots next to them. The dots turn blue, and you have to count them to get the reading.

Not sure of that makes sense, but can't think of any other way to describe them. I hate them lol.

A tempadot is a 'single-use, disposable clinical thermometer that can measure oral or axillary body temperature. Available in Fahrenheit or Celsius, Tempa•DOT™ B thermometers are clean, non-sterile and packaged unwrapped in bulk boxes of 250 for economical use'. There you go!
