| hi Personally, I found it out of date and very 'hippyish' and very 70's! I read the first few chapters and couldnt read anymore! But some people think its great so its up to the individual I suppose! I got a copy from the library so I didnt waste any money. Perhaps your library may have a copy so you could browse it first! | I bought a copy of this and think its an absolute classic- it is very hippyish but the overwhelming message is one of love and faith and believing in women's bodies- an ethos i sometimes wish i, and others, could keep when on the labour ward. what they have achieved on the farm is amazing- something like a 1% section rate and very rare perineal tears. it also has a few chapters at the back of the book about anatomy and physiology in the normal childbearing woman, aswell as tips on complications. its not everybody's cup of tea, but i rather liked it, and the 'gushing' on their birth stories often moved me to tears. it is a very 'different' book, and worth the read if you can get through it xxxxx

| I have read this, but didn't enjoy it as much as the other books I have read..such as The Baby Catcher, The Light in the window etc. It was too hippyish for me, although it was very interesting to read how they started out and developed their skills etc.

| I've read this and didn't enjoy it at all. It seemed very.. err.. idealistic? Not very realistic and a little too hippyish for my liking. I did enjoy babycatcher, light in the window and Call the midwife. I believe they show a more realistic picture of midwifery in the times they were set... Each to their own though, I know a few that really enjoyed this book.

| Am i right in thinking Ina May mas not always a midwife. It is only in the 4th edition (2002) she admits that she has only just become registered with north americas registation of midwives?
