Fantastic book! Absolutely amazing how this midwife travels around the east end on a mere bicycle attending women in labour, caring for them before and after birth. Gives a great perspective to midwifery in the 1950's. Very well told, I'd recommend this book to anybody

This is another brilliant book, it combines my two favourite subjects....midwifery and history.

It is written about midwifery in the 1950's, and it is amazing to read the accounts of births in that era.

What I liked was the way homebirth was normal and expected and that the families prepared for birth by getting the hot water going, warming the towels by the fire and calling for a sister or friend as well as the midwife.

I love the imagery of her on her bike doing her visits, imagine that now!

Fantastic read, the accounts of travelling the East End on a bicycle to all the homes of her ladies! It was such an insightto days gone by in England and how homebirths were the norm. and all the family was involved.
An exciting read!

I loved this book. Highly recommended. Read it over Christmas whilst waiting for a reply from Uni; made me even more determined to study midwifery. x

My boyfriends mother recently lent me this book to read, as she thought I'd like it - and she was right! I love real-life stories, and it was fascinating reading about how things used to done. I think we can learn from it - I wish families were more well informed of the birthing procedure involved, it's nice to have an excuse to bring the family unit closer together! Also they had home births without too many diseases - as from what I can gather the mother's mother would make sure the birthing room was immaculate - if people had more home births now (as long as no complications were foreseen) then there would be more beds free on the wards! But I suppose work commitments get in the way these days... So family is often absent... It's a shame....

But I was amazed at the Latino wife with many, many children - to think that a baby that premature survived without setting toe in the hospital!!!

xXx
