Default Must have books!

Hi all

You must get your hands on 'The Waterbirth Wook' and 'The Active Birth Book' by Janet Balaskas as these are crucial to normal, holistic midwifery practice. I would also have a look at anything by Ina May Gaskin,i.e. 'Spiritual Midwifery'...some of her books have dodgy 70's pics in them but the content is good. Oh and 'Let Birth Be Born Again' by Jean Sutton.

Also a must for your studies and beyond if you plan to be a true evidence based, woman centred midwife is 'Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth' by Enkin et al.

A decent midwifery dictionary would be good too...I still dip into mine every now and then when I come across something unusual and I can't spell it!

The Active Birth Book is one of my required readings but I'm having a hard time finding it anywhere....Have to admit I haven't looked in a little while, though.

Thank you for this list! I adore Ina May. I also like Holistic Midwifery Vol. I by Anne Frye. And the Midwife's Handbook is one I refer back to quite a bit.

hey!!

What good Midwifery dictionaries are there out there?? I've already brought myself "Physiology in Childbearing" second edition and am having to stop to research these new words, so a really good dictionary would come in handy!!

Any suggestions? x

Hiya,

This is the one I've got, I have found it quite useful.

The Oxford Handbook of Midwifery is most excellent. I always carry it in my portfolio bag on placement with me. (great when it gets quiet and for night shifts!) Lots of info in a small book, with lots of bookmark thingies too!

I've found that the Oxford Handbook of Midwifery and Balliers Midwives' Dictionary make a great team. If you are a new student and can't afford to splash out too much these two are good for starters, anything else borrow from college/university library until you've found one to invest in!

I'm in love with my "High Risk Delivery & Pregnancy" (4th Edition) by Gilbert - its great, not too techinical that it drowns me and the perfect size to carry around (A5) so it doesn't take up too much space.
