Default A guaranteed job for one year!

Take a look at the site below it describes the procedure that has been put in place to implement an arrangement to ensure that every newly qualified nurse and midwife who wishes to work in NHS Scotland receives an offer of employment. The intention is that every exiting student nurse or midwife who fulfils the eligibility criteria set out below, receives the offer of a job either through their own means or with assistance. The Scottish Executive has developed this guidance in full partnership with the representatives of NHS operating divisions and Boards, universities, and the professional organisations of the RCN, RCM and UNISON. The guarantee is one of the recommendations in the Facing the Future report.

Now thats what I call committment to newly qualified midwives!

Ahem, it's the Scottish government now y'know I think it's a fantastic thing. There have been several policies put in place in Scotland that I am extremely proud of. Hopefully the SNP follow suit, now if only someone would sort out the godawful application process that is CATCH.

Which would be great if it actually worked (im speaking for NQ midwives here as I dont know how its working with the NQ nurses). In reality only a few people ever actually get jobs through this scheme as the trusts arent obliged to find vacant posts where there arent any already. So, if there arent any vacancies already (which in almost all scottish units is pretty much the norm) they wont invent one so that newly qualified MW's can take advantage of this scheme.
The few who do get posts are often expected to work within several units, sometimes a few months at a time or often totally randomly which means no preceptorship, no chance to build confidence as all units work to different policies and procedures and no prospects at the end as your never really a team member anywhere so no one has any compulsion to actually fit you into a post when your year is up.

Basically it looks good on paper but in reality its just that, a pretty paper exercise with no real substance.
