Default Hello all, I have been away for a while...

Hello everyone.

Just wanted to say hello and explain where I have been (I know it isn't very interesting, but anyhow, before I post away, thought it best to)

My dearly loved Mum passed away at Christmas, she was taken ill suddenly and died on the 23rd of December.
I am continuing on as Mum was proud of me for doing this and I feel her with me everyday.

I had a tough shift yesterday, as a young woman I was looking after was increasingly looking likely to have an instrumental delivery and her Mum was very upset. We spent a really tough 2 hours in the room, trying our very hardest to give her all the encouragement we could to get her to push out her baby. Alas, it was not to be and she needed the help of the doctors to get him out using forceps. It was my hardest shift yet and i was so upset for everyone, frustrated that we couldn't do anything and as usual felt marginalised by the team of doctors that took over and pushed us out of the way, literally.

On top of that I really miss my Mum and this job is very difficult at times seeing such strong family bonds and emotions...

As a result I held it together to see the baby born and help out and then hugged the family and wished them all the best. I held it together just long enough to get into the changing rooms and promptly burst into tears.

God only knows why I am telling you guys all of this, apologies for the self-pity, as yet I have not had the chance to discuss it with anyone and on top of everything else I guess it is hard to take.

Help??

Aww smwife,

I am so very sorry to hear about your beloced Mum, it is so hard, I know from my own experience, I so want my Mum & Dad here to share in the highs and lows of the course. But I too feel they are with me every day, and that is some comfort, albeit not the same.

It sounds like you did a great job with that young lady, and you gave all the encouragement and support you could to her, but as you said, it wasn't too be, and I imagine that is so hard to deal with.

I am sure before long I too will be heading for the changing room and bursting into tears too, and I am sure every other student is the same. You have more reason than most at the moment so don't forget that.

I am sure your Mum is smiling down on you and is very proud to see you carrying on, even though it is so hard.

You have the makings of a brilliant caring and compassionate midwife, and you should be proud of what you are achieving hun.

Please feel free to pm me if you need to talk, I can't do much, but I do understand, and I can listen and offer support.

Pauline xx

It really hard to lose someone round christmas. My nanna died on christmas day when I was younger, and I know my mum found it really hard for years afterwards, because people kept bringing it up. My thoughts go out to you

So sorry for your loss. When you lose a parent it can make you feel very vunerable. It is hard to imagine life without them but it was their time and this is your time. It is healthy to think about them, talk about them and to feel sad, cry, laugh and to be angry. Time does heal but allow yourself the time to grieve in the way that is right for you. Grief does not have a time limit and you have to take it as it comes. Remembering a loved one is a comfort and part of healing.

Hope you are o.k and that you continue to be a fantastic student midwife that gives women the care they deserve. Your mum will always be with you and so proud of all you have done and all you will do.

LOL

Hey hun,

We've had our chat outside of the forum but you know my thoughts are with you and if theres anything I can do just say.

Re your shift at work I think itd be good for you sit down with your mentor or a tutor and debrief its really important to let it out in this job and as a profession we are geared up to look after oneanother as we recognise how important it is.

Big hugs xxx
