Default Urgent suggestions needed pls

My mentor is on leave for two weeks now, and so far this week I have worked with three different midwives, which is ok, and I know it will happen.

But, the midwife I worked with yesterday said I needed some continuity, and suggested I change my shifts so I could work with her. So I changed today's shift from an early to a late, and tomorrow's late to an early so that I can work with her.

I have just checked the bus times, and I can't get a bus early enough to get me to the hospital for my shift. I have two options as I see it, be late for my shift and finish later to make the time up, letting her know today (I hate being late for anything) or, I get a taxi and be on time, the only drawback with this is it would cost me about £18 which I can't really afford.

My children obviously want to come and see me tomorrow, and I have already changed the arrangements once due to my shift change, so don't want to mess them about either, oh, I am in a mess

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Ok, first suggestion...take a deep breath!!
I would suggest discussing it with her, I'm sure she'll be understanding as she's already shown she cares. and she might have a solution, she probably lives local and/or works with people that do, so might be able to offer you a lift or she knows of another way of getting in!
hope your not too stressed over it, keep smiling

Hmm...any friends who can drop you off? or cohort buddies working that shift maybe?

Otherwise I would talk to her and see if that is ok, I am sure it will be she seems nice.

Hope you work it out

Thanks Jem,

I will try that, and see what she says, although I have a feeling she may just say for me to do the late, which I don't want to do now.

That was my first thought, but I don't know anyone that would be going that way, especially so early on a Sunday morning lol. I don't think any of my cohort live this way that I will get chance to see before tomorrow, we tend to only see each other in passing, the only other student on my ward lives in the opposite direction.

Thanks for the suggestions xx

Personally I'd just get the taxi and ask around for a lift for the next early you have to do on a Sunday.

I tell her you'll be in late and will stay on the extra or make it up another day as its a specila day - explain you cant afford £18 cab and she should be fine with that

personally, i would have just stuck with my original shifts! Continuity with a mentor is great, and changing mentors so much is a real pain in the neck, BUT if getting continuity means i have to change best laid plans, (ones that involve changing family commitments), well then i just wouldnt do it! Thats not to mention having to spend tonsa money on a taxi!!!
You will have so many weeks on placement over the next 3 years, whats the point getting in a mess about one??!!

Oh god i know all about continuity............ I just finished 3 12hour shifts and over those 3 days i have had 6 mentors!!!!!!!!!

My mentor was off sick so i got stuck changing with every shift.

I feel so drained. Did not even get a birth in that time. I got stuch in HDU most of the time. Oh well.

If you get a chance of continuity i would grab at it. Its where you build your own confidence. I feel.

In the end I decided on the taxi, it was a bit cheaper than I was expecting, and worth it to have the continuity which I feel I needed.

It is really hard to keep having to work with someone different, but I have tried to see it as an opportunity to see how different midwives work.
