and, i know women are fantastic beings, especially when it comes to producing a person from their own body, but they don't half bitch....

there's a really bad atmosphere in our midwifery group alone, some people are unfriendly and it affects everybody, but luckily the people that get on can rely on each other. It worries me that the unfriendly people will become midwives and carry on their behaviour in a unit, dismissing and upsetting others. I think it starts as a student, like others say, when you're treated badly yourself.

I had an awful mentor last semester, and my experiences this semester (luckily not with my own mentor- who i love very much but who is very stressed) have made me think about how i will be as a mentor in the future- how i will make very effort to assisst a probably terrified student have the amazing experience they deserve.

and like my very good friend riabirt was saying- how the heck do we deal with it?

If we're not taught to love midwifery, how are we going to make good midwives??

Well said Kelly! There does seem to be a culture of bitchiness at times, in my last job I worked with mostly men and loved it, purely because if someone had a problem with you they'd come out and say whatever was bothering them then you could get over it and get on with things - much better that way!

I just want to make sure that when my time as a student m/w comes I'm wise enough to rise above it all and keep smiling because I go to work to do a job I LOVE, not to get involved in "office politics"

Hi, I'm glad that so many of us share the same view even if the wrong one! It's always good to know that you're not alone.

However it saddens me that some midwives wont give students the time of day, and also the amount of back stabbing that can go on in earshot of others which is really unprofessional. Despite this there are also many fantastic midwives out there who will go the "extra mile" to help students, and it's these that make it all worthwhile

ive only been on community but my mentor was really nice. i have a heard a few stories about the girls having a rough time with their mentors. they must know what being a mentor involves they have to do a course, if they dont want students then why become a mentor,

As I understand it it is part of the role of being a midwife, not something they choose to do. But if I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me on this.

Yes, I believe it is part of the NMC code of professional conduct basically to facilitate the education and training of others.. pass on your knowledge... though based on some people's experience, maybe it SHOULD be an opt in thing

Midwives don't always choose to mentor, and this is often the problem IMO.

Some midwives start mentoring too soon after qualifying, I know I wouldn't feel ready to mentor 2 years post qual!!!

As they are often short of mentors and have high numbers of students coming through, students are placed with mentors who have not taken the mentorship module, are not really keen and are loathe to take it as it is mostly in their own time and not paid (training)

I was a very new, keen first year and when on community went to a community meeting (there were two other studes there, one from my cohort and a third year too) when the mentorship course was brought up, they all groaned, it was awful for us all to sit there and witness that tbh.

I don't know how many volunteer, but it is a much lesser proportion to those who are roped in to make up the numbers.

I did think they would volunteer as they wished to mentor students, that isn't quite the case, despite the NMC requirement.

Unfortunately, the midwife who made the comment about not wanting to work with me is a sign off mentor and has done the course. It does appear that there are a few that have done ths course, although appear to have llittle respect for students, nor actually want to teach them...
