just seen this thread, I finished my first D/S placement in jan, I did enjoy it, I got to have a lot of 1 on 1 experience with the woman which quite a few of them said they appreciated because they hadn't had someone constantly there with the through previous labours, so that was good.

I was on a busy ward and one of the things that was evident was the lack of midwives, on many occation the midwives were run off their feet looking after up to 3 women each.

As a student their I felt that sometimes some of the staff forgot that they were once students so could have treated some of us students better but most of the staff were lovely and I found the HCA were really friendly and always willing to help.

I start my community placement next and have to admit I am looking forward to the change in pace, I'm hoping it will be a lot less hectic!

Ha ha, I can now J ™.

Well, I have had two shifts so far, both very different, the first was absolutely manic, and I got to see and learn so many things, it was brilliant. The second shift was a lot quieter, and my mentor actually had time to go through things with me in more detail. I was involved in the care of women a lot more than I expected to be, and that was brilliant, lots of one to one care.

So far I love it, and can't wait to go back tomorrow, I have really missed being on shift over the last couple of days. I will update this as I go along if anyone is interested in reading it? It will be good to refect on what I have being doing and the things I have seen during the next few weeks.

Default Re: Delivery suite Update!

I have been back on shift today, and it didn't start very well, I had writtien the wrong shift down and turned up for an early when I should have been on a late.

But everyone was fine and said it would be ok for me to stay, and then allocated a midwife for me to work with. We had handover and started to get notes etc ready, chatting as we went along, she was lovely and very easy to get on with.

We took over the care of a lady who was a multip, gravida 5, para 4, and she had been having quite strong contractions before we went to see her.
My midwife did the obs on the lady, and checked her over and estimated that she was about 5 cms diated.

We continued to monitor her, and offer support to her and her husband throughout our shift, but it became apparent that her contractions had slowed down (I seem to have been here before lol)

It came time to hand over the care of this lady to my mentor, and I had already asked if I could stay so that I could see the delivery through, so I started to work with my mentor at this point.

We continued to monitor the lady and baby regularly, and my mentor decided to check if any progress had been made due to the slowing down of the contractions, the lady was now 6 - 7 cms, my mentor asked permission to do an ARM to try to speed things up, and this was given and the ARM performed.

Things quickly began to gather speed following this, and the contractions returned stronger and on a more reugular basis. It soon became apparent to me that the lady was pushing involutarily, and almost as soon as I thought it, my mentor said it lol. So she checked the lady again to see if she was dilated enough to be pushing. She discovered that there was a long lip of the cervix around the baby's head, but she managed to move it out of the way.

Another midwife was called in to help with checking and drying the baby, and a few minutes later the head was visible, I got to watch the head turn as it was delivered through the vagina (restitution) and sowly but surely the rest of the body followed. I even got to cut the cord as dad didn't want to do it, so I was asked if I would like to as it was my frist witness.

A beautiful baby boy was born at 15.52 pm, and I was speechless, it was such an amazing experience and one I will never forget, what a privilage to be abe to share that precious moment in a family's life.

Oh, and J ™, I did notice 'the smell' today, I can't describe it, I just know I smelt it lol.
