Thanks everyone,

I am still feeling really happy and amazed at how brilliant it all was. I have watched many births on video and on tv, but nothing can ever beat witnessing it first hand.

Josie, that is a great idea, I think I will do that, be great as you say to look back on. Ha ha, seems as though we might have.

Can you have more than one blog on here? Thought it would be good to have a seperate one for this.

I have had quite a difficult shift today. had my second witness, this morning, but when the baby was born she was rather flat, she needed a couple of rescue breaths, but then picked up quite well, by the time Mum was sorted the baby was ready to feed which was lovely to see.

Towards the end of the shift, I went with my mentor to care for a lady who was in 2nd stage and doing well. I thought it was going to be great to get two witnesses on the same shift. But it soon became apparent to my mentor that all was not well. There were marked decelerations on the CTG, and these were taking too long to recover.

A doctor was called and a ventouse performed, but when the baby was born she was very flat, she was so limp and lifeless, it was really scary to see.

She did come round after a little while and is fine now, but I found it a really difficult experience, I felt in the way on the room, as it was filled with so many people, and I seemed to get in the way of someone wherever I stood. Also there was nothing I could do, only stand and watch what was happening, and I have never felt to helpless.

I guess the good thing to come out of this is that both baby's are well, and I am thankful for that.

I will hopefully have chance to talk it through with my mentor tomorrow as we didn't get chance today.

When I went on shift this afternoon, it didn't look hopeful that I would be able to get any witnesses, some ladies had already delivered, some were ante natal ladies that needed monitoring etc, and just one or two ladies were in early labour.

I was looking after a post section lady with my mentor, this lady was a type 1 diabetic, so needed regular monitoring for herself and baby, and this was done throughout the shift. It was a really good learning experience for me, as it was the first time I had helped to care for a diabletic lady post delievery before.

Later in the shift we also took over the care of another post delivery lady who had quite a traumatic delivery, but was fine.

I had just finished taking a tray to the kitchen when I heard my name called, I looked round and it was one of the other midwives, she asked if I wanted to go with her to witness a birth, the lady was already pushing and it shouldn't be too long. Of course I said yes I would, that would be lovely.

We got in the room, and the midwife introduced me, asked permission for me to stay, and Mum was fine with that. Mum then started having a contraction as I opened the delivery packs, and before I had chance to finish opening them, the baby's head was born, quickly followed by the rest of the body. I have never seen a baby born so quick, it was definately a case of blink and you would have missed it lol.

It was a beautiful baby girl, and she was fine, despite her rapid entrance into the world, Mum went from vertex visible to baby delivered in a little over five minutes. It was amazing.

So now, I need just one more witness and then I can be hands on, I can't wait for that, it must be even more special when you have actually been able to play a part in delivering the baby. But for now, that is for another day.
