Well done hun, I hope sleep has given you the opportunity to get a bit excited. It sounds as if you are more than ready to start doing your own now. How lovely for you - I hope it happens soon.

Later on I had chance to go in and witness a very quick normal delivery of a lady that another midwife was caring for. After the earlier experience it was lovely to see a normal birth.

Started to care for another lady with my mentor who was in early labour, and I was encouraged by my mentor to carry out obs on this lady and generally care for her.

Inbetween caring for this lady, I got chance to witness another normal delivery by another midwife, I arrived in the room just as the vertex was visible, and the head crowned, and the baby slid out with the next contraction.

It has been a lovely shift for the most part, although I found the beginning difficult for various reasons. I have witnessed more deliveries today than I have for the last few shifts put together which was great.

This is fab, I hope you are alright after whatever upset you at the start? Here if you need to chat, hun.
You did really well (was it a kiwi, btw?) I am really chuffed you have all your witnesses and one for luck!, you are ready now then!!!

Hope you have had a nice, restful baby-filled sleep and are ready to tell all this morning, Mrs! I am really happy for you, hun.

Well I didn't sleep too well last night, so wasn't quite 'with it' when I went on shift this morning, not sure if that was a good or bad thing, but there you go.

I took over the care of a lovely lady who was doing really well, her contractions were regular and quite strong, however she was 'holding back' from progressing any further due to a problem she had with her last delivery.

While my mentor went and got a few things ready, read the notes etc, I stayed with the lady and monitored her and baby every 15 mins, reassured her, and generally told her how well she was doing.

My mentor was just trying to assess whether or not the Waters had broken when she came back in the room, when there was a gush of Liquor, no need to check that then lol. She asked me to document it and put the time of the SROM. Within a couple of seconds she was yelling to me to 'put some gloves on quick' and pass her some.

We just literately had time to put the gloves on when the vertex was visible. My mentor expalined where I needed to put my hands, explained what to do and why etc. and with the next contraction baby was delivered.

It was so quick, and so amazing, I can't believe I actually did that, the baby was a beautiful little girl and she was fine at delivery. My mentor then helped me deliver the placenta, explaining what to do and why etc, and it was delivered perfectly.

I can now make sense of the videos, lectures and books I have read on restitution, and how to deliver the baby first down and then up to allow the shoulders to pass.

Baby was put into skin to skin with Mum, and we left them to get to know each other for a while, and when we returned to the room, baby had latched on the breast and was feeding like a dream.

All I can say is 'wow' it was just amazing, and the only thing that will top that now is doing a delivery 100% on my own. But for now I am more than happy to enjoy this wonderful experience, and I won't ever forget it.

Now I just know that I am doing the right thing, and I can't ever imagine doing anything else.

i'm just about to finish my first stint on delivery- it's been a real learning experience, incredible, frightening, emotional and beautiful all in one. i delivered my 8th baby the other day, and it doesnt seem to be getting any less amazing, or bewildering.

my advice would just be to get stuck in- i was so inhibited to begin with but the more you do, the more you experience, and that's what it's all about.

and don't be afraid to ask questions, not just of your mentor, but anyone, if you can't find something or do something just ask anyone, and the majority of them will be happy to help!!

and in my experience, a smile goes a long way, even when you're having a bad day- they're contagious!

xxxx

Fabuloso girl - you carry on enjoying that feeling and then add the other 39 + to it. It will all add up to a fantastic high. Well done, it sounds wonderful.
