She was pushing for an hour and FH was slow to recover between contractions and as far as I could tell she (mentor) was doing everything to avoid the Doc coming back to take her to theatre, as he was hanging around asking about her progress. Mum was tiny, and baby was 9lb 2, he was huge compared to her. I think it was a combination of all those things,
I know to ask next time.. I was just in awe of everything tbh, I just didn't question it.

No it sounds feasible, it should only be done for fetal distress thats all, I'm just intrigued when I see stuff like that, you see our trust now allows (ooh how very nice of them) women to push for up to 2 hours now, but we don't advocate directed pushing, not good for mum nor baby etc... So women have a better chance of normal delivery, lots of nice stretching to the perineum, thus no Epis, reduce tears etc...

Congrats of the witnesses.
I have to say, yes its hard to start with having questions fired at you, but its a fab way of learning stuff.

I'm still enjoying myself after the 3 shifts I have done so far, still feel like a rabbit caught in headlights most of the time, but am getting to know my way around. Have just 2 witnesses as one lady I looked after ended up with a section, and others with forceps . I did my first VE on my 2nd shift. I just did 2 long days on Thurs and Fri which are 14.5 hours each, and am still feeling tired.
I'm on nights Mon - Weds next week, so any tips much appreciated, especially for the first one, will already have slept all the night before, so won't sleep in the day, so how on earth am I meant to stay awake all the first night??

Glad you are still enjoying it, and hope it keeps on going well for you.

I am dreading doing nights for the first time, I am worried about falling asleep during the shift, but I guess that depends on how busy the unit is.

Re nights, I always try to have a two hour afternoon nap the day of the night shift, you will be amazed how you manage though.

The first one is the hardest, take plenty to drink and a few snacky things too, they really help. And make sure the following day you get 6 or more hours sleep ready for the next night. On the last one, the following morning limit yourself to sleeping for four or five and you should be able to sleep that night.

We usually get an hour and a half kip during the shift, though not always possible.

I am working Mon and Tues night so will think of you staying awake too!

Hope it goes well

That first night was a tough one, I felt drunk by 5am ..lol. Got my 5 witnesses now and 2 hands on. My lady last night though ended up with a retained placenta and PPH . But I enjoyed staying with her all through theatre and in recovery, which I think she really appreciated (wouldn't have got to stay in recovery on days) she was a very anxious person and convinced herself she was going to die, I managed to calm her down and keep her chatting all through the manual removal and she was surprised when it had finished and she hadn't realised. Reckon I did OK there then .
I'm off until next Tusday now.
I should be doing this in a personal blog shouldn't I, not on a thread.. sorry ..lol.

That's great news Freefall,

It must be great to move from witnesses to hands on, soon be catching your first, now that must be something special.

Glad you were able to reassure the lady, she will remember that.

Have a good rest and a lovely weekend.

Hope I can post some nice things when I am on delivery suite.
