Do they do routine measurement of the fundal hight where she was? I'm guessing by your post that they do.
The only was I can imagine the midwife missing this is if she didn't actually measure her, or if she is doing it completely wrong.

What sort of size is your friend and babies dad? If they are only small, then it would be unlikely that she would have a baig baby, but still, that is on the small side.

I know through my time in community that each midwife can argue on a couple of cm, but to be short by 12cm! I can't imagine anyone missing that!

I really don't know, possibly someone with more experience can shed more light.

I would suggest though that your friend asks to see her maternity notes and see the head of midwifery at her trust so maybe some light can be shed on the situation.

I'm glad to hear that baby is ok though x

It is difficult to suggest things as the info, is a bit vague to be fair, try and get more info, and I'll try and give a better answer, same as what Sassy said above though, is she full term? Had she had scans to determine size/weight etc...

I am sure there is more to it than that, and we know very little don't we?

I am interested to know if she was term, previous history, her health during pregnancy, her build etc. Any concern over the fetal size would've meant USS to assess.

Glad they are both ok.

But its the scan results not the midwife who determines baby has downs or not did she have a amnio? There must be more to this. . . and a friends friend aka chinese whispers a bit here mayb? Did she go to all her ante natal checks? Did she have her 12 week growth scan and 20week anomlie scan? If baby was deemed small or poor growth she would have had more scans, at least that is how they work in my trust.

Unfortunatly too many people are out ot blame the midw we have complaints in our trust about partners not being offered tea

Hiya! Had to reply to this. Exactly same thing happened to my sister, my niece was born at term weighing 4lbs 3ozs! Nobody picked up on the fact she was so teeny, despite my sister having terrible sickness all the way through the pregnancy, and not being able to eat anything other than dry toast. Think everyone was shocked when she was born, I remember thinking "where's the rest of her!!". But thank god she was ok. Bet ur friends baby will pile on the pounds in no time, the little ones come on the best

What was mum's BMI? - it virtually impossible to measure Fundal Height or assess fetal size on big birds - also uss notoriously unreliable for size, often they don't even get the sex correct! Most down's babies that make it to birth are a surprise/ shock as society seems to demand we terminate them if discovered antenatally
