Default First night on call..............

and i'm a bag of nerves lol!!!

I really don't know if i'll be able to sleep tonight, i'll be waiting for the phone to go all night!!! I have butterflies in my stomach..................lol!

I have asked my mentor to give me a ring if she thinks i'll make it in time as it will take me 45mins to get there from the call.

Really must get my nerves under control so i can actually get some sleep tonight!!!

Please tell me i'm not the only person to have felt like this???????????????

Your not the first and you won't be the last. Get your self to bed, even if you can't sleep.

When I got called out after I'd worked a full, long day. I got called out at 8.30pm and didn't get to bed until 2am. I was then back up at 6am and didn't finish placement until 9pm. I didn't effect me though until a couple of days later as I was on such a high after the beautiful homebirth.

Oh i love being on call. Well the excitment of it at least. I hope you get called out. I still have not seen a home birth.

Good luck!

Its such a shame when it comes to the morning and you look at you phone and still nothing.

Let us know if you get any calls.

How do other people feel. Do you dread being on call as students or not?

A mentor I was working with told me that for a night 'on call' all you needed was a dress and drawers.

She meant that you have to have everything prepared to be able to jump out of bed and get dressed quickly and leave the house in less than 10 mins.

With that in mind, i was determined that I would be able to sleep because if I got a call out, I wanted to be refreshed enough to drive.

The only time I was called out, we met at 23:30 at this house, examined this primigravid women, was only 2cms, went back home - went to sleep and was called back at 01.30. Woman was 4 cms - we settled in for a beautiful homebirth. Ran out of Entonox at 04.00 so offered to re-examine to see whether it was worth calling for some more. Still at 4 cms, no progress, no decent. Decision was made to transfer woman in for further pain relief.
She ended up having a forceps delivery late that afternoon.
Oh well, I will see a homebirth one day.

Awww, thats really sad You will get one Kentish spitfire and I really hope it's worth the wait.

I wasn't supposed to be on call when I got called out. I was sat in my PJ's cuddling my sleeping son
My midwife called me to say that she was 2nd on call and had just got to womans house and that 1st midwife and woman didn't mind if I went.
I ended up going in jeans and a Tshirt (very professional) as my uniform was in the wash!!!
I got to womans house at 9ish, she had baby at 10.47 and I was back in bed for about 2am Perfect.

I was so excited though, I was on a high for days. I was told to take the time too when baby was Born and I forgot I was so welled up. Luckily the midwife asked time virtually straight away so there was no harm done.

Really hope you do get called and get to see a lovely homebirth!

I have never been called out after ten weeks community, being on call for three months with every member of the team and two weeks at the birthing centre

I sincerely hope you get to see something great, keep us posted!
