| Can anone tell me if there is a certain amount of births you have to witness before you can qualify? And do you have to see a wide range of different births (cesarean, breech, normal etc) or is it just pot luck what you see before you qualify? Thanks x

| You get to witness five normal births (maybe less depends on the mentor) some may let you count instrumental or C/S births as witnesses, depends where you are too. You will witness theatre births and very soon become involved by scrubbing in and taking the baby! and after your witnesses will 'catch' babies of which you need forty to qualify. The instrumentals and C/S are not counted in that total so you end up being involved in a lot of births. SO in one shift you may help look after three labouring women, go to theatre and take the baby , and catch a normal delivery too!

| I was so engrossed in what was happening when I witnessed my first caesaren section, that I didn't have time to think how I felt, it was an amazing, and very interesting procedure to watch. ![]()

| [quote=Freefall;34871]We have to have witnessed 5 normal biths, carry out 40 normal deliveries, 100 antenatal examination, 100 supervision and care of postnatal women, 100 care and supervision of the newborn, 40 care of women at risk, and 40 supervision and care in labour. quote] the NMC set down the requirement, so we all have to do the same regardless of where you study. in addition to this there is 10 high risk deliveries as well i think. Plus the other stuff as FF says, this includes keeping a running total of things such as episitomies, VE's, theory of suturing and any suturing performed, parent ed attended etc etc etc but the thing that seems to change from place to place and student to student and mentor to mentor is the number of witnessess you have to get before getting hands on....it is usually somewhere between 5 and 10.
