I know well done to you, and so soon too, thats excellent, I used one for a woman who didn't want to get out of the bath the other week, so for 2 hours I used a pinard, I was only miffed as I'd straightened my untame hair before the 12 hour shift and after the 2 hours the left side of my head was frizzed and right side was dead straight, haha, glad there are no mirrors in the rooms, I'd be horrified half of the time, I look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards after some shifts x

It must have been really hard to use a pinnard like that, and for 2 hours as well. Sorry Tracy, but I couldn't help but chuckle when you said about your hair

My only problem now is that my mentor will be expecting me to hear the FH that way every time

The women seem to like the wooden ones as they arent cold and dont look like a surgical instrument, a few women I have cared for look at me with a 'Where is THAT going?!!!' kind of look with a metal pinards.....

Great. So now we'll have people coming in because they can't hear the FH with their loo roll and 'is everything alright'?!

OK, Much as I am a fan of my pinard (especially helpful to confirm difficult palpations) you will not hear anything with a pinard underwater, so, why did you opt for the pinard and not the sonic aid?

Maybe they didnt have the waterproof ones where Tracyb is.... it would surprise me though because I just thought all units that encouraged women to labour/birth in water would have one, makes sense to me.... particularly when so many of us havent had the opportunity to 'master' the pinard...

We don't have waterproof sonicaids. Just ask Mum to lift her tummy out of the water. Have tried covering the sonicaid transducer with a latex glove but it would not pick up. I have heard that a condom will work as a waterproof shield that does not interfere with FH sounds but we don't tend to have them available on labour ward. Loo roll might get soggy! Pinnard is better if hopital trust fussy about getting thier sonicaids splashed, can't see anything wrong with that at all.

Argos now sell some contraption that people can use to listen to the FH at home. Have had women coming to ANC saying 'no need to listen in I've done it already.' Would hate to think that women may have reduced FM and then not come in because they've listened in at home and think baby is fine. Very worrying in my opinion.

I have a plastic one which works just as well as the lovely wooden one my mentor had. I think it would be difficult to stay in that position to count for a full minute - I have been using the pinard to find the FH (checking against mum's pulse) then using the sonicaid to let mum have a listen and count for a minute (so much easier as you can go straight to the slight impression left by the pinard!).

None of the RM's use the pinard regularly - got the impression they come out for the benefit of the students!

Are you taught to use them in practice??? How often do you see midwives using them? I know of some students who say they don't even have them in the delivery rooms, nor do the community midwives use them?? Are we/they losing their skills? Or just prefer the convenience of the sonicaid? What do you think??

I was taught how to use them whilst on community, but haven't used one since, they always use a sonicaid on the ante natal ward and delivery suite. I think it is a skill that should be taught, what happens if the sonicaid breaks down, would they not be able to ascultate the fetal heart then?
