Default Female Pelvis pictures.....labelled to help learning

If you click on the pictures you can enlarge them so you can see them better, or print them out.

1. Anterior view of the pelvis

Note the bones which make up the bony pelvis:

the ilium, ischium and pubis (two of each), plus the sacrum.
The pubis consists of the superior ramus (branch), the body
(the vertical part) and the inferior ramus, which is continuous
with the ischium. The three pelvic bones unite each side at the acetabulum.
Blood vessels and nerves pass through the obturator foramen to reach the medial compartment of the thigh.

2. Posterior view of the pelvis

Note the greater and lesser sciatic notches: the sciatic nerve

passes out of the pelvis via the greater sciatic notch. The posterior
superior and posterior inferior iliac spines are sites of
attachment for the posterior sacro-iliac ligaments.

Note the sacral canal
which the cauda equina runs through, and the
sacral foramina, through which the sacral nerves exit. The sacral hiatus
is the open roof of the terminal part of the sacral canal. The lateral
and median sacral crests are sites of attachment for pelvic
ligaments and back muscles.

3.Superior view of the pelvis

The two halves of the pelvis (sometimes called the innominate bones)

meet anteriorly at the pubic symphysis, a secondary cartilaginous joint.
The anterior superior and anterior inferior iliac spines provide attachment
for muscles and ligaments. Note the shape of the pelvic inlet, and the
protruding ischial spines - is this pelvis male or female? The hollow part
of the ilium, the iliac fossa, gives origin to the iliacus muscle.

4. Formation of the acetabulum

The right innominate bone, showing how the three pelvic bones

form the acetabulum. Note that the pubis contributes least. Fusion
occurs between 12-18 yrs of age. The joint between the
inferior pubic ramus and the ischium can also be seen.
