Default Re: The business of being born!

Just come back home from watching this and it is a brilliant video, so sad what is happening in America at the moment but also watching the video sometimes was similar to watching what goes on in practice. The c/section rates in some/most hospitals over there is 45%, and they were saying they (the obs) didn't know what skills midwives had in facilitating homebirth, the equipment they took or nothing. The video showed one particular midwife who went alone to homebirths and quite often they were in a pool at home, she was talking of her struggles with the government. They also visit birth centres, one of which was having to close down as it was so difficult to get their payment from the insurance companies over there.
Another point was made that if a midwife working in the hospital has a normal birth rate of over 30% the ob (physician) will often get rid of her as its stiff competition for them- how bad is that???

That is awful Tracy,

I am amazed by that, you would think that somewhere like America would be more up to date with regards home births, birth centres etc. I find it hard to believe that a physician would even think about getting rid of a midwife because she had a high success rate with normal births, it just doesn't make sense to me.

No its sad, some of the women on the video said that when they told friends/family they were pregnant they simply asked them what date they had planned to have it on and where. When they said they were having a home birth, the reaction was that it was dangerous, the baby might die etc..

Glad you enjoyed it Tracy. How sad it is, us developed countries haven't a clue have we??

I would love to see it, any ideas where the other showings are?

I wonder whether our uni could show it?

Well she said it will be released soon to the general public on DVD, but I'm not sure when. You'll really enjoy it, disappointing that more midwives from our Trust weren't there though harumph
