Trauma to the perineum during childbirth occurs frequently and may have serious consequences. Perineal trauma can occur spontaneously or intentionally by a surgical incision (episiotomy). It is estimated that over 85% of women who have spontaneous vaginal birth will sustain some form of perineal trauma and of these 60-70% will require suturing. This course is essential for all midwives practising obstetrics and repairing perineal tears but will also be useful to doctors and Labour Ward Managers.
