Hi all. I started my access course this week. All we have done really is fill out forms and have inductions. The best bit starts next week when we actally start doing some learning. I was just woundering if anyone can give me some advice on who and where to contact about getting some work experience. I would prefer something to do with midwifery or pregnancy but anything will do really as long as it benefits me on my course and looks good on my personal statement for uni. All advice welcome. :) :)

Hi there!

I am from Scotland and my results for 5th year gave me:

Higher Biology: B
Higher Chemistry: C
Higher Modern Studies: B
Higher English: A

I am wondering if I am likely to get a conditional/unconditional with this in regards to midwifery?

I am trying to do as much as I can to improve my personal statement. These include 3 volunteering opportunities.

1 is volunteering an hour a week befriending a old person at an old folks home.

Another (called interest link) is giving young people with additional needs 2 hours of my time a week to have a normal social situation which lets them feel more accepted in society.

My other one is through the school called "school service". It is timetabled at school and I work 3/4 hours a week during the day helping a 2nd year concentrate and focus on her work. I have got to know her quite well and she appreciates my help.

I have had a day's work expereince working with the local community midwives. This enabled me to see what they do everyday as midwives and decide if it was the right course for me.

Also, I am hoping to have 2 seperate weeks at different hospitals in regards to midwifery/maternity care.

So, back to my first point! Am I doing all the right things and is there anything else I can be doing!? Thanks! :)

Phew what a wait he was! 15 days overdue in the end!
I went in to be induced on Sunday .. at 7am .. very looonngg day - two lots of gel to get things moving - LOTS of walking..!
Finally, my waters broke naturally at 8pm - contractions were 1 min apart, quite painful - but bearable..I was really excited thinking it's VERY close... we moved out of the 4 bedded ward (I was last of the 4!!) to the delivery room, using gas & air coping rather well .. had a VE and was totally gutted to be told I was only 3cm !!!! I've been 2cm for weeks!!!!!
Sooo... then I thought I'd have an epidural, pain was strong and was told 1cm per hour...poor Tom! He was exhausted too, so I suggested he went home for a few hours when epidural was done so I could sleep too - it was about 10pm. (He didn't get to go home until 3am!!!)
The epidural was done, all well by 11pm - had to wait for another lady to have hers done first... very hard !!!
The pain eased loads, but I could feel him coming down - between each contraction though, managing well and had a couple of epidural top ups.
Then it hit me and I had to push uncontrollably! He travelled so fast, I didn't actually get to push - I had to pant him out, then there he was !!!!
Monday 6th September 12.50am Rudy Oliver... weighing in at 11lbs.....!!!
We had various doctors and midwives popping in to see the 11lb baby...!!
I am SO happy he has arrived, and he is just so handsome! Very lovely having a boy too, the girls just adore him, even Lola (2 1/2) who we thought would be jealous just can't get enough of him!

Anyhoo, he needs a feed - and the girls will be home from school any minute causing chaos for a cuddle!
