    Gorgeous baby!

But... (and I haven't started the course yet...) why was she given an episiotomy? Why did he have his hands all over the baby's head while it was being born? And why was he holding the cord as the placenta was being delivered? He seemed very hands on... or is that just me and are many births like that here too???

    Wow!
Loved this video, soooooo amazing, SMNET has fuelled my passion for midwifery so much. My 18 year old daughter has just watched this with me and she's totally groused out by it lol I guess that’s why she’s doing hairdressing and not midwifery, less mess she said lol
I think she's barking wanting to stick rollers in lovely old ladies hair everyday but hey just goes to show how diverse personalities are.

I suspect this video is from a country where episiotomy is routine, I don't think it was necessary in this instance.

Some people like to apply counter pressure to the baby's head as it is born to stop it coming out too quickly although isn't always necessary. I notice he also checked for a cord around the neck which isn't routine.

Holding the cord to deliver the placenta is routine. Notice he was putting pressure on the uterus with one hand to guard it from inverting, he then pulls the placenta out by the cord using controlled cord traction.

Suctioning of the baby after birth also isn't routine.

I felt sorry for the poor mother who was reaching down desperate to hold her new baby but he was left on the bed while the cord clamping was done.

Nice demonstration of rotation of the head before the shoulders are born though.
