i have completed an access to humanities course in 2005 when i was going to do teacher training at uni but due to having a little girl didn't go down this route and i'm glad as my heart has always been for midwifery but i'm not very good at science. i've emailed uni's to see if i need to update my qualifications (have studied more since 2005) and they suggested doing another access course with biology in as i haven't a level 3 science, the problem i'm faced with is on the college website it says you don't have to pay for your first level 3 course as it gets paid for you but as this is my second then i wouldn't get it paid, and i am an unemployed single parent at the moment and there is no way i could afford the course. has anyone else come across this? anyone got suggestions on what i could do?

Hi, sorry for not seeing this post earlier.
I think in your situation it would be a good idea to ring the uni's you'll be applying to and find out, seeing as you already have an access qualification at level 3, if you can do something for your 'recent study' such as an A level or a counselling course or if there is one in your area, a breastfeeding peer support or mother's support course.
You may then be able to get funding if it's a different type of course, just a thought.
Also you could ring the college you're applying to and ask them if they have a student finance department or similar and speak to them about any grants you may be able to get.
Let us know how you get on and good luck!! :)

i've emailed all 5 uni's that i will be applying to, 3 have got back to me and the advice of two of them is do an access to nursing etc... with biology preferably a module, and edge hill has advised me to go to one of their open days and ask. the other two i'm still waiting on replies. i would do a level 3 course on its own if i could but there is nothing for me (mature student) only access but i will look into the breastfeeding peer support and see if thats available near me thanks :)

Maybe you could look into DLC as I am sure you can do just certain modules ... and they do Science based ones. Might be worth enquiring with someone on the website
    :) x
