    1. How long does the World Health Organisation recommend exclusive breastfeeding for, and why?
    A) 6 Months exclusive breastfeeding, as breast milk provides all of the energy and nutrients and infant needs during this time.

    2. What is exclusive breastfeeding?
    A) Where the infant receives only milk from it’s mother or a wet nurse, or expressed milk and no other fluids (including water) or solid food, apart from vitamins, minerals or medication in the form of syrup or drops If medically required.

    3) Why should a night feed be encouraged during the postnatal period?
    A) As prolactin levels are higher throughout the night, increasing milk supply therefore establishing lactation.

    4) Beautiful to breastfeeding is the amazing hormonal reflex called the ‘let down’ reflex. This reflex is stimulate by the baby sucking at the breast. What other ways could the let down reflex be stimulated if the mother was unable to have the baby sucking at the breast?
    A)

    • Massage or manual stimulation of the breast
    • Mum seeing baby (or a picture)
    • Holding
    • Smelling
    • Touching
    • Hearing her baby.

    5) Breastfeeding has amazing benefits for both mum and baby. Name two health benefits of fully breastfeeding for 4-6 months for the baby compared to formula feeding?
    A)

    • Reduced incidence of:
    • gastroenteritis
    • Respiratory Infections
    • Otitis Media
    • Urinary Tract Infections
    • Necrotising Enterocolitis,
    • Atopic Disease
    • Less risk of diabetes
    • inflammatory bowel disease
    • celiac disease
    • childhood leukaemia
    • dental problems.

    6) Name two benefits of breastfeeding for mums?
    A)

    • Less likely to develop breast cancer
    • Less risk of ovarian cancer
    • Reduced incidence of postnatal depression
    • reduced risk of type 2 diabetes
    • lower cost.

    7) Susie, a 35 year old primiparous woman has just had a spontaneous vaginal delivery at term and you, as a student midwife have been asked to help Susie initiate breastfeeding. What information can you share with Susie about the benefits of early skin to skin contact?
    A) Cochrane review (Moore, 2007) showed that babies who had skin to skin contact with their mothers after birth were more likely to interact with their mothers, stay warmer, cry less, more likely to choose to breastfeed and breastfeed for a longer duration.

    8) You are a student midwife currently on your postnatal ward placement. You are asked to help Alex, having had her first baby to breastfeed. Name two things you could consider in helping Alex prepare to feed her baby, recognising her comfort needs?
    A)
    · Discuss that feeding could continue for 30-60 minutes so empty her bladder (the release of oxytocin could cause her uterus to contract and may make having a full bladder uncomfortable).
    · Make sure Alex has a drink
    · Change the baby’s nappy
    · Consider the environment – privacy, cushions, support, buzzer.

    9) You are a student midwife visiting Sophie, a multiparous woman, four days post spontaneous vaginal delivery at term. Sophie is feeding her baby on arrival at her home and isn’t sure whether her baby is ‘latched on’ properly.
Name three pieces of information you could offer Sophie to enable her to recognise signs of a well positioned and attached baby?
    A)

    • ‘Tummy to Mummy’
    • ‘Nose to Nipple’
    • Mouth wide open
    • Less areola visible underneath the chin than above the nipple
    • Chin touching the breast
    • Lower lip rolled down
    • No Pain
    • Audible and visible swallowing
    • Rhythmic suck
    • Relaxed arms and hands

    10) In 1989, UNICEF created an initiative designed to ensure best care is given to support women in breastfeeding through a ten step programme to successful breastfeeding. What is this initiative called?

    A)
    Baby Friendly Initiative
