    Hey everyone,

well now i have firmly accepted my place at UWE i have started to think about the things i will need....

the thing that i think will be most expensive is the books i am going to need...does anyone have any recommendations as to what to look for?

also with shoes...do they need to fully cover the foot? i live right by Clarks village so i think it will be clarks shoe for me!

hows everyone getting on then.....any new offers or interviews flying around?

    xx

When I got my offer I created a Gift List on Amazon of all the things I would need for my course; books, stationary, fob watch etc. Then I emailed all the link to the list to all my friends and family and said that those were the things I wanted for my birthday. I got everything I needed and it did not cost me a penny!!

Wait for uni recommendations on your books. A lot of them differ, and it's not worth spending loads on books which you might not use on your course; although I would say that the Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Procedures (Student Edition) is a great buy as it does have loads in it.
Most universities and hospital trusts will ask that you have shoes that fully cover the foot. My uni also advised that you thought about the material (i.e. if you accidently dropped a needle on your foot, would it pierce through and give you a needlestick injury?). I have Clarks unloops, and they are fantastic - so comfortable :)
You may need to be aware with fob watches, as apparently some trusts are phasing out the use of metal fobs (not sure how true this is, but it's better to be safe than sorry I think :p). But fob watches are essential - I use mine all the time to tell people the time, take pulse rates, respiration rates etc.
Most essential pieces for your first few weeks at uni though is pens and notepads. Make sure you get loads of black pens, as they're the only colour you can use in documentation on placement, and most people like to have a red pen for highlighting bits in notes or on handover sheets.
You might want to get a pair of nursing scissors by the time you're on placement as well, you don't realise how much you need them until you're on the wards haha (but you'll often find most registered nurses are happy to lend theirs to you) :p
    Hope that helps a bit!
    xx

Was just wondering if we could possibly have a sticky thread of recommended reading for wannabe/student/qualified nurses? Not just ones for uni, anything that is a good nursing read :)
