Oh Thanks! Fancinating! So breastcrawl takes between 30-60 minutes, which is nature's 'golden hour'. I didn't know that the baby's massaging/kneading whilst working its way towards the breast acts to make the nipple protruded and therefore help latch...but of course, nature is soooooooo amazing. Dunno if i'd fancy having all those people peering over me though but it works for them!

I have watched a very similar video to that recently, and I think it is just amazing to see how the baby finds it's way to the mother's breast, and then finds the nipple.

I sit her almost urging the baby on, and it just proves to me that babies aren't quite as helpless as we think they are.

I've seen a similar film clip, comparing a baby whose mum had no pain relief in labour and one who had pethidine. Both babies were placed on the mum's belly, and the pethidine baby was really floppy and sleepy and stayed put... The other, no surprises, crawled its way up and latched itself on to the nipple. Incredible!

One mentor told me that during pregnancy, the developing of the linea negra and the nipples darkening is thought to be so that the baby can see the nipples better and follows the line of the linea negra as it crawls its way to the breasts. Makes sense, hey! Amazing stuff!

This is Biological nurturing at its best. There is a really good article in the last practicing midwife by Suzanne Colson who has researched Metabolic Adaptaion and the transistion to neonatal Life.
