From September 2012, all new eligible students will be eligible for a £1,000 grant. They will also be eligible for a means tested bursary (from NHS Bursaries) and a maintenance loan (from Student Finance).

The following tables shows typical support available to students.

The maintenance loan is a set amount for each year (showed in the above table), split into 3 installments throughout the year (for example you get a 3rd of the yearly amount in September, January and May).

It is reduced in the final year of study to £2,498 in London, £1,811 outside London and £1,324 for students who live with their parents whilst studying.

You will have to pay this back in the future, but not until you are earning over a certain amount of money.

You can apply for this as soon as you have an offer from university, you fill out an online form http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/portal/page?_pageid=153,4680119&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL

The NHS bursary is a means tested grant which you do not have to pay back. The amounts shown in the table above are the maximum amounts you are entitled to each year once they have worked out your individual circumstances.

The bursary calculator should be available from April 2012, though remember this will only be an estimate.

Once you have accepted a place at university they will send you an NHS number that you need to fill in the bursary forms. If you accept your place early (for example January) you will not get the information posted till a bit later in the year.

Send off the forms ASAP because they can take a while to process.

Get information you need for the forms ready ASAP because you need to send them documents such as passport / birth certificates of you and any dependants such as children / child benefit award letter etc, though when you fill out the form it will tell you exactly what you need to send.

If your placement is further than university from where you live (use AA route finder to check) then you can claim for travel costs to and from placement.

Tuition fees are still paid directly by the NHS and you don't need to think/worry about them at all.

Thanks Penguin, very handy. Just to add, there are dependants allowances and childcare on top of that, and NHS Bursaries have confirmed the calculator be available from April.

Does this mean that you get each of the blocks in your row? I.E if you lived in london you'd get the top row of payments?

If so, I'd be getting the middle row and it is around £7kish? This would make it possible for me to go to Uni and leave work :) If not, then I'm baffled by it still!

I saw in another thread the max was £25k?! o_O I know thats wrong haha but crazy.

And yeah, I think I'd be eligble for quite a bit since we have a mortgage to pay and only OH would be working. I'll have a nosy on the calculator in April. But like people say... where theres a will, theres a way!

When it said the cut off was 25k? I Think they meant the cut off for getting childcare was when your incomings were greater than 25k! X

Try the old calculator and see what that gives you?

I live in London and do not live with parents so would get the top row. IS the non-means tested maintenance loan from SFE from the NHS?

If all the funding in the above table is from the NHS can we also apply from a loan from the SFE>?
