    Hi everyone!

ANOTHER question on money/bursary, I should probably phone them up but just wondered if any of you had experienced this!

My hubby is hoping to give up his job and start his own business on the lead up to me starting uni, it will probably happen after I've had to apply for bursary, but just before I start uni. I have two questions, the first is, going self employed he won't have a projected income, he's hoping it will be decent, but there won't be any definate figures, do you know if this might benefit us positively in terms of getting more grant, and childcare allowance etc? I know that's a bit of a how long is a piece of string question, but his income now isn't particularly high, but high enough that we dont really qualify for anything, however, if he doesn't know what his income will be, are we likely to be able to get all of it? There's the possibility he won't cover his expenses in the first year!! (This is madness to be doing it at this time I know!).

My second question, is how easy is it to change you financial information once you've entered it all, and do you ever end up having to pay money back if things change etc?

    Thanks, hope that made sense?!

Be really careful with your income and outgoing estimates, get them as accurate as possible. I am speaking from experience.... In my first year I was paid childcare allowance all year and this continued into.my 2nd year when just after Christmas I received a letter saying they had 'reassessed my award' and it turned out they had overpaid me, bit just by a little bit either! They wanted over thousands back within 30 days. When I explained that wasn't possible and cried etc they said well if I don't pay they will take it out of my monthly bursary until its paid off, no sympathy or anything. I had given them correct figures and they had got the calculations wrong but it didn't make any difference. I eventually persuaded them to allow me to make a payment arrangement so have been paying £55/mth over three years as it was their error.

I would really avoid taking any wild guesses if at all possible and overestimate his income, at the end of the tax year when you make your claim for next year and have his p60s and accounts etc you can get them to reassess it and pay the extra that is owed if necessary.

That's great thanks for your advice! And what a rubbish thing to have happened to u!! Good idea to overestimate! Does anyone know what the protocol is on self employment? It's so hard to predict what the income will be!

I think that if he is just giving up work to go into self employment you might lose out because they will still go on last years earnings as he is still deemed to be working and then your 2nd year would be based on this forthcoming years earnings where he is self employed.
Regarding self employment you have to predict what the annual income is anyway ready for when any accounts/tax returns have to be in at the end of January then you let them know what the actual figure is later.
It would be different if he was unemployed or if you were to become separated etc...I think its relatively easy to reapply on that basis. I used to be self employed and tbh I would think that in the first year the outgoings may far out weigh the income dependant on the nature of the business so it could become a big struggle.....these are just my own ramblings though....x

Im moving out of halls as I can't stand it and its very expensive...
Im moving bk to mums as shes struggling to pay her rent so Id rather help her out and help her support my nan who has cancer who lives with her...
However, as I am classed as "living with parents" my bursarys being reduced by £120 a month!!! Thats a lot! And it will cost me £200 in fuel to get to Uni/placement when I move.
I won't get any support off my mum cos she's skint. I will be paying her rent as she can't afford to have me there rent free and I dont want her getting behind on the mortgage...

Is there any way of appealing this decision, as Im 26, not 18 and expecting to get an easy life funded by my folks..
