I don't understand how this is any different from a thirteen year old girl seeking contraception from a family planning clinic, where they would mantain confidentiality? It's not like it's being forced on the girls. And not giving them the implant isn't going to stop them from having sex if they want to.

What would their parents prefer, that the girls know that their parents will be told, so are too scared to get it, and risk pregnancy, or that the girls are confident to get it in the knowledge that it will all be kept confidential.

Having said all that, I think that proper sex education is more useful than just giving out contraception, so I hope these teenagers are being properly informed about contraception, unplanned pregnancy and STIs as well as having the option to get the implant. And if their parents are so shocked that they might be having sex they should make sure they talk to their children about the emotional aspects of sex and peer pressure, so the girls can make informed choices.

    Just my thoughts!

I'm not outraged at the thought of this...I'd rather my daughter looked for some form of contraception than fell pregnant at 13.

The older my daughter gets the more horrified I am at the fact one day I'll have to deal with all this. Argh. And then twice more with the other two.

Yes I'd hope she'd come to me first. Then I can lock her in her room untill she's 30.

    I'm joking.

I would be angry if the NHS refused to provide contraceptives to under 16s, actually, considering how we know that kids experiment. Since doctors are allowed to make a professional judgment on the child's ability to consent to any other medical procedure at that age, I don't see why this is any different.

Think some parents are just so outraged by the thought of their 13 year old having sex (I would be weeping, I think!!) that they offload their anger at the nearest secondary target.
And its a bit of a control issue, too. Cos they ARE still kids, and its hard to let go of that rein, I think.
But Id still rather they lessened the risk of procreation at 13!!!

I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea of the 13 year olds I know having sex (heck, I don't really relish the idea of my siblings having sex and they're all over 16), but I remember myself and my friends at that age and some of us definitely were doing. I went to the pregnancy clinic three times with two different friends for the morning after pill.

My daughter is 13 and as much as thought of her having sex scares the heck out of me the thought that she couldn't get proper contraception if she felt she couldn't come to me scares me even more.
