Re: any ideas for my dissertation?

One midwife suggested a topic to me the other night. Basically we were talking about how in the good auld days babies were taken to the nursery to give mum a good nights sleep, and if their baby needed a breast feed the mums came to the nursery where they could get help and support from other mums aswell as their midwife. There has been interesting journal on how sleep deprevation can be really damaging etc and maybe if women were given a proper rest following their birth then breast feeding rates would improve as well as general well being. However, it goes against baby friendly policy so not routinly done any more. Sorry this isnt very well structured but hope you get what i mean x x

sorry, forgot to finish. Therefore maybe your dissertation could argue the point that a mum should be allowed a good rest should she request it. xx

You really need to find a topic that you're genuinely interested in, and make sure it focuses on the role of the midwife or midwifery.

Then have a read around that main topic and think about a question that you want answered.
For example, I met two women in practice in early labour on the same day. One wasn't coping very well and asked for pain relief early on, and the other copes well throughout. In conversation, I asked both women if they'd been to antenatal classes, and the first woman hadn't but the second had. So from that I wondered if antenatal classes actually helped women cope with labour.... et voila! My dissertation topic. I then based my question around that.

But just make sure that it's a subjec that really interests you as you'll be reading, eating, sleeping, drinking your dissertation topic for a LONG time!

    Good luck, chuck!

But in addition to one you are interested in then have a look round re amount of research - I really wanted to do Pregnancy after sexual abuse and/or rape but couldn't find loads on it.

Topic still really interests me and now I reckon I could have got enough stuff if I used tangents ad advoiding VEs etc

Re: any ideas for my dissertation?

I know i am 3+ years away from having to really think about it but i have already decided i will do mine about shoulder dystocia. After having it with both my babies and since reading about it i find it really interesting, but in a very scary way IYKWIM.
I think personally, for me, I would want my major research to be related to a very important clinic aspect, so that given the situation i know with 100% confidence i know what to do, but thats the worrier in me lol.

Failing that i would probaly do about how the outcome of the birth relates to at what stage of labour the mother comes to hospital, thinking about how the hormones and anxiety can effect the dialtion. That sorta stuff!

Re: any ideas for my dissertation?

thanks guys!! i have come up with a few ideas, just can't decide now!!! perineal massage to reduce the risks of perineal trauma at birth, antenatal education and how it impacts on the birth experience, ARM or not to ARM. We have to pick something where we could change practice and do a presentation after, so with the perineal massage i could make an antenatal leaflet for example. I quite like the antenatal education one and how women are in labour as some appear like they cannot cope in labour. I am stuck now after coming up with ideas and don't know what to pick!!! xx
