We have looked into all the financials and talked (and talked and talked) about how we would both feel and what we would expect from each other and we've decided to do it. He needs to give 8 weeks notice so he is handing on notice on 1st july. Scary but if its possible I think I am now more excited because all the childcare worries I had niggling at the back of my mind are now gone :D thanks for all the advice ladies xxxx

If I could afford it, I wouldnt hesitate, we live in a block of flats in a rotten part of town, where there is broken glass, noisy parties, horrible nieghbours, drug users/dealers and even the odd needle floating about. Really dont wana be here lol! Espescally not with my 4yo.

Thanks for the good luck wishes everyone, got a day off today, so am going to see what they say xx

anyone doing a degree whos partner is a house husband?

    Hi all!
Just wanted to find anyone who is in the same position as i will be hopefully (if and when i get into uni!)
My partner and i have decided that when i do the Midwifery degree, he will be a house husband. Hes currently unemployed, and has been on and off for a couple of years. We have 5 children, so we thought it would be the least stressful, and most logical thing to do. Is anyone else out there in the same position? what help do you get, if any? I'm totally clueless about the bursary/ loan side of things, and if we'll still get any help from benefits :(
Id like to have an idea of what financial position we'll be in.
    thanks guys!

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what you might get, but you might be able to look at the bursary calculator to help you work it out. My husband quit his job so I could do the course (his hours were all over the place and would not have fitted in with shifts). We have two kids and get the basic bursary as well as dependents allowance for hubby and the kids and parent learning allowance. It's all income based, so they'll ask about what money you have coming in and what outgoings you have and work out a figure. Sorry it's quite vague, but it's worked out as per your particular circumstances. Your hubby will not be able to get a job seekers type benefit if he is not looking for work, but you may still get tax credits. Hope that helps!

Mummytofive, there is an NHS bursary calculator to give a you a vague idea of what you might get or you can give them a ring and ask for an estimate based on your circumstances.

    If there's no other income coming into the house I think it's somewhere around £4,000 for you, including the extra weeks and this tells you how much for hubby and each of the kids;

    http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students/1123.aspx

Plus you will still get child tax credits (and with that- free prescriptions/school meals, etc), reduced council tax and some of your rent paid (again, once you have a figure from the bursaries, ring the council and ask them for an estimate on how much housing benefit you might get).

I think there's a new £1,000 yearly grant from this September too.

And you can get a student loan from Student Finance at the reduced amount (around £2300-ish) if you choose to apply for it.

It's not a great deal of money, especially when travel costs are taken off, but it's quite liveable. x

we have been considering this as our childcare bill is going to be extornionate!!
after reading this I think I may ring council and ask what type of help we would be entitled to, in a private rent house and with ct and hb.
What a helpful thread, thank u xx

My hubby is a househusband. He isn't entitled to any personal benefits such as IS or JSA (IS is usually for lone parents and he's not jobseeking as his job is within the home) but we live in a council house and get HB, CT, NHS bursary for us and our children, student loan, C.Tax.C, Ch.Ben, free prescriptions/dentistry/opticians and free school meals.

I do not take any of this for granted as you never know what the government are planning to do next, but currently we are doing OK! We couldn't afford brand spanking new appliances if they broke down but we can afford to run a car and have the odd treat now and then. Christmas and birthdays are budgeted strictly but the kids are never without clothing/footwear etc. It is doable in this current situation, and of course, my other half is there for the kids whenever I can't be which is a HUGE bonus. He is a fab cook and is really domesticated so we really cannot grumble. Maybe I should stay a student forever!! :p

funky rabbit, thats fab that you are doing well. gives me hope!! My hubby has worked since he was 15, and to give up work for me is a huge thing, its a very scary step to take.
So difficult to know what to do for the best!!

We're doing the house husband thing, we have 5 kids also.

OH is doing the school runs but we are going to put the baby in childcare during the school day so he can still have some sanity but will pick her up on his way home from getting the others from school, he'll have them for all my weekend/night and school holiday shifts and take over majority of household stuff and he is a far better cook than me but as someone above mentioned having him around and available so if one's sick or upset one of us there for them is priceless, I'm looking at 1.5 hour commute each way so it's going to be long days.

I spoke to bursary's and they will still pay 85% of our childcare even with him not 'working'.

Don't think we could do it if he worked aswell.
